Oakes (8058), gone rambling, Vietnam May 9, 2003 Updated: Dec 24, 2004This beer hits the nail on the head. Golden-brown colour. Aroma of toast, nuts, woody hops, amaretto and lemon. Rich, almost pungent bitterness (cabrales!!). Almondy notes, bark, dark chocolate. The finish has toasted hops, minerals, and a dry woody character. An assertive American amber that does not fit neatly into any style. I have to admit, first Perry made the vile weed taste good and now he’s made a beer with a billion IBUs that are compensated for with crystal malts taste good. (Hats off to John Graham, too, for his work on this kick ass brew!) Rastacouere (5551), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Nov 28, 2004 Deep copper, clear. Decent head despite not being in best shape out of a one week old growler. Surprisingly light nose hitting the nostrils with original flavours: nuts, butter, various herbs, marine salt, rubber… Very hoppy development in mouth where those vegetal/green hops come out almost chalky combined with the roasty malt aspect. Quite watery texture, light body, soft carbonation. Looking forward to sampling this one on draught. MartinT (5030), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Nov 29, 2004 Roasted, nutty coffee beans emboldened by vanilla currents...Hops are extremely black peppery and get very pugnacious in the finish to the detriment of the pleasant maltiness...This was from a growler, so I need to revisit in fresh tap form... Lubiere (4463), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Dec 12, 2004 This was direct from the keg, courtesy of Pondoshuffles. Red copper ale with light malt and hops aroma. Intense hops, citrus, and nutty finish. Rich finish and body. tiggmtl (4307), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Sep 27, 2003 Strong hop aroma amber copper colour with small fully diminishing head. More of a coating than a lacing. Very bitter balanced by a big malt beer. Really thick full mouthfeel. Thoroughly enjoyable but hard to have more than one. Feels a whole lot more potent than 5.3% for some reason. On tap at Augusta's Winking Judge in Hamilton. BBB63 (4199), La Porte, Indiana, USA Aug 2, 2003 Beautiful reddish/brown hue with a small off-white head. Roasted malt, hazelnut, milk chocolate, floral, woody and smokey aroma. Tart hoppy initial taste, some caramel malt comes on to balance the brew. Very bitter and coffee dry finish. Medium-bodied with a chewy and lively mouthfeel. Hint of alcohol feel. A above average brown that is a testament to the brewmaster art. Recommended. Ughsmash (3981), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Jul 31, 2009 Bottled (in May 2009, it looks like), and it opened with some gusto (huge pfft and a bit of a gusher).. poured sunny orange with a tall white head that left bunches of lacing. The aroma opened with spicy, bright, interesting hoppage (floral, piney, and citrusy) over sweet nutty and caramel character.. sour oaky accents as it warmed up.. kinda dug it. The flavor didn’t hold up as well.. sour, bitter, and generally abrasive the whole way through with fruit skins, grassy, and earthy notes taking charge.. the sweet caramel and nutty notes were there, but they were just pounded by the other stuff.. long, painful finish. Low-medium bodied with huge carbonation on the palate.. this wasn’t old by any standard, but it struck me as infected. Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Nov 14, 2004 Updated: Dec 31, 2004One of the best Ontario brews, and one of the top browns I have enjoyed. Hoppy, bitter, dark malts. Nicely served at Beer Bistro for the Winterfest. Roasted malt gives it nice brown colour. Nice retained head. Carmel on malts and nutty, but bitterness prevails. Nutty, over the top and out-of-the box as this very interesting brewery will do.
Had agian at Volo Cafe and a little less received, which I think is the strong detergent in glasses.
