Commercial Description:
Our new bitter brown ale, Corporal Punishment, is our most complex beer to date. This ale is a wonderfully bitter, incredibly malty and nicely hoppy brew. Amber and Dark Crystal malts, and Willamette and Challenger hops are used in this 5.3 percent alcohol, 84 International Bittering Units (that’s right, 84 IBU) ale. A rich mahogany in colour, this ale blends flavours of fresh bitter coffee, dry caramel and nuttiness with light dry chocolate, woody hop and citric notes.

Bottle from LCBO. Pours dark brown to deep copper in colour, moderate off-white head. Aroma is not too intense, herbal and earthy hops. Hops really stand out in the flavour department, with a hint of smoked malt. Great Ontario beer,

Medium brown colour, weak head, slightly unclear. Seems to have a little bit of sediment on the bottom, didn’t realize it though and didn’t get much of it. A little nutty and citrusy aroma, quite interesting, but could be a little ore pungent. Flavour is excellent, quite bitter with lots of deep hop flavours hidden in this beer. Very nice brown ale flavour, one of the best browns I’ve had. Can’t believe it’s only 4.3% with this much flavour. Hint of smoke and a long finish, very nice.

Bottle. Pours clear amber with a small head. Short retention. Nose is hoppy bitter. Lots of malt, quite sweet. Taste is bitter, malty. A bit roasty. Earthy hops. Little hint of butter here and there. Starting to get a bit more butter now. A bit disappointing.

Bottled (in May 2009, it looks like), and it opened with some gusto (huge pfft and a bit of a gusher).. poured sunny orange with a tall white head that left bunches of lacing. The aroma opened with spicy, bright, interesting hoppage (floral, piney, and citrusy) over sweet nutty and caramel character.. sour oaky accents as it warmed up.. kinda dug it. The flavor didn’t hold up as well.. sour, bitter, and generally abrasive the whole way through with fruit skins, grassy, and earthy notes taking charge.. the sweet caramel and nutty notes were there, but they were just pounded by the other stuff.. long, painful finish. Low-medium bodied with huge carbonation on the palate.. this wasn’t old by any standard, but it struck me as infected.

Bottle.Clear golden with a thick off-white head with good retetnion and lacing. Aroma is brown malt, toasted malt, and earthy notes. Flavor is toasted malt, weird burnt flavor, metal and earthy notes with a bitter finish.

341 mL bottle. Pours amber with very little head. Aroma is a bit roasty and earthy. Flavour starts with a bitter coffee and then turns a bit sour - finishes long and bitter. Not bad, but I was expecting quite a bit more given the high ratings frankly.

Bottle. Amber beer with a weird powder cocoa aroma. Flavour starts with a sour tinge moving to a sharp off-bitterness with an undercurrent of coca. Chocolate runs through the middle. Coffee notes in the finish. Strong hop aftertaste. Complex for a low ABV. Gets tastier as you go.
