| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 7, 2009 Bottled sample. Deep amber in colour with medium carbonation. Malty milk chocolate aromas upfront, along with citrusy undertones. Tastes a bit like a Terry’s chocolate orange, but with some earhty+herbal hops thrown in for good measure. Light mouthfeel and moderate bitterness. Fairly refreshing for a brown ale. Somewhat British bitter-like. probstk (1028), Nepean, Ontario, Canada
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jan 15, 2009 Updated: Sep 29, 2009341 ml bottle from LCBO, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass. NO05/08.
App.: Clear medium copper with a fair tan head.
Aroma: Tangy, sour, infected, nutty, hints of fruit and a little earthy hops.
Palate: Medium body and fairly soft carbonation.
Flav.: Still tangy, sour and infected with some nuttiness, light fruitiness and a little bread crust; on swallowing, it is thin and acrid with out of balance bitterness.
I suspect that something is wrong. This has defects I’ve noted in their other products. A shame, because I bet Perry would have done it well.
Re-rated Sept. 29/09 with a fresh bottle from the brewery.
App.: Deep copper, clear, nice off-white froth.
Aroma: Lots of nuts and burnt sugar, earthy and woody hops, stark, English malts.
Palate: Medium body and moderate carbonation.
Flav.: Similar to the nose with plenty of earthy, burnt, British malts and nuttiness, some earthy and woody hops; dry with fair bitterness.
Much better fresh and uninfected. Imperial-John (156), Mississauga, Ontario, Canada
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 13, 2009 Clear brown amber with tan foamy head. Roasted nutty coffee aroma. Smooth dry bitterness, so much so it almost evaporates in the mouth. Dry vanilla, toffee and woody nut flavour with a woody after-taste. An acquired taste that I have yet to acquire. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 7, 2009 341 mL stubby. Brown with a ring of head. Lots of caramel and nuts in the aroma. Tonnes of malt and tonnes of bitterness in the flavour. The hops must go in early, though, because there’s not a lot of flavour from the hops, and even less aroma. There’s also quite a bit of chocolate in there, along with come espresso. I’ve been drinking this on tap for a while, and I have to admit that I had no idea that this beer is only 4.3% It tastes so much bigger. Great beer. Pyrozoid (352), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 6, 2009 Shared with Pyrozoid. Caramel/copper poor with a quickly fading off-white head. Aromas of caramel, smoked almonds, wood chips, light pepper notes, white chocolate. Jesus lord!... Starts with a bitter bang, then comes some caramel sweetness all ending with a crisp dry finish. What character for a 4% brew! Hoppy flavors, hints of liquid smoke and caramel malts. Medium body. Impressive. GRM (1255), Aylmer, Quebec, Canada
