Commercial Description:
Our new bitter brown ale, Corporal Punishment, is our most complex beer to date. This ale is a wonderfully bitter, incredibly malty and nicely hoppy brew. Amber and Dark Crystal malts, and Willamette and Challenger hops are used in this 5.3 percent alcohol, 84 International Bittering Units (that’s right, 84 IBU) ale. A rich mahogany in colour, this ale blends flavours of fresh bitter coffee, dry caramel and nuttiness with light dry chocolate, woody hop and citric notes.

One of the best Ontario brews, and one of the top browns I have enjoyed. Hoppy, bitter, dark malts. Nicely served at Beer Bistro for the Winterfest. Roasted malt gives it nice brown colour. Nice retained head. Carmel on malts and nutty, but bitterness prevails. Nutty, over the top and out-of-the box as this very interesting brewery will do. Had agian at Volo Cafe and a little less received, which I think is the strong detergent in glasses.

Rated Nov 2004Cask @ Bow & Arrow. Nice orange brown body with a smallish off white head. Nice hoppy aroma. Flavour is very hoppy with a long lingering hoppy bitterness in the finish. Seems more malty than the Sgt. Palate is nice. Thought it was a bit warm at first sip but decided it was just right after half a pint.
Rated Nov 2004Draft. Orangey brown body, good size white head and nice lacing. Hoppy aroma with some malty notes. Substantially less roast than I remember, which is good since I didn’t really care for it at the time. Seems like a very different beer. Lots of hoppy bitterness, some noce malt and caramel notes in the flavour. Good mouthfeel. Looking forward to trying this again this season. 6/4/6/3/15
Rated July 2003Draft. I was anticipating trying the Corporal Punishment for the first time. It was not quite what I was expecting, and had more of a roasted flavour than I though. It was tasty but I prefer their Sgt. Major’s IPA. 7/4/5/3/16

(Draught) On tap at the Black Tomato. Love the Corporal with the cricket bat in his hand - very menacing-looking dude! Pour a thin, shave cream head and a mahogany body. Very hoppy nose with hints at bitterness... seemingly in reflection to the Corporal's mannerisms. Strong hop taste with a chocolate malt hinting. Very bitter finish. Lasting creaminess. Performed a side-by-side tasting with the Scotch Irish IPA and this beer is much more hoppy and bitter; the IPA almost tastes cask conditioned by comparison (more mild flavour and subtle complexity). Love to get more paddle-whacks by the Corporal!

Draught at Volo. Pours a clear sparkling orange-brown with a small diminishing off-white head. Mild aroma of sweet malt, hops and nuts. Flavour also of malt, hops and nuts with a long bitter finish. Body’s a little thin and there’s a hint of metal or something in the aftertaste. A pretty good version of the style and I enjoyed it but I think Scotch Irish can do better.

Bottle. Amber beer with a weird powder cocoa aroma. Flavour starts with a sour tinge moving to a sharp off-bitterness with an undercurrent of coca. Chocolate runs through the middle. Coffee notes in the finish. Strong hop aftertaste. Complex for a low ABV. Gets tastier as you go.

One week old growler. Pours a reddish brown color with no head at all. Intriguing aroma of nuts and smoked malt. Flavor of nuts and brown sugar which is interesting but near the finish there’s an unpleasant, harsh, peppery and bitter flavor that lasts a while. Light body, the carbonation level is low but still decent considering the age of the growler. Of course the beer would have been better if it was fresher.

Nutty, chocolate aroma, deep copper, lovely little vanilla head, some lace. Nutty, woody and chocolate malt flavours are an absolute marriage! The after taste is a sensational malt, with just the right amount of bitterness. Wonderfully balanced. Terrific!
