Commercial Description:
Our new bitter brown ale, Corporal Punishment, is our most complex beer to date. This ale is a wonderfully bitter, incredibly malty and nicely hoppy brew. Amber and Dark Crystal malts, and Willamette and Challenger hops are used in this 5.3 percent alcohol, 84 International Bittering Units (that’s right, 84 IBU) ale. A rich mahogany in colour, this ale blends flavours of fresh bitter coffee, dry caramel and nuttiness with light dry chocolate, woody hop and citric notes.

[343-20070618] Tap @ Volo (Toronto, ON). Smells of toasted grassy hops. Clear, dark amber body with a quick bubbly off-white head. Tastes like smokey toasted hops. Medium body is rough. Roughness is a bit much but otherwise all right.

Massive re-rate. I had this a few times over the summer and this is not the beer I loved at its cask launch a couple of years back. On tap, it is oily, thin, and sickly sweet. There is some nice bitterness here, certainly more than you would expect from a brown (in truth though, this seems more like an ESB to me), but there is an ashy burnt base too. Still a nice session pint, no where near the world-beater I remember. If it changes next year, I’ll be happy to re-rate. Original 8/4/8/4/18. Cask, Bow and Arrow, Toronto. Dark orange pour, small cask head. A mix of fruit/sweet hop aroma. Medium body in mouthfeel, nice malt base, not watery like so many Ontario cask ales, wonderful nutty taste - true to its brown ale roots with lots of malt to back it up and a ton of hops that are actually very well balanced. A classic session ale or a treat on its own.

Dark amber, thin off-white head. Strong hop (english) and malt flavour. Aftertaste bittering, but a good beer. I had this on draught at the Winking Judge in Hamilton, Ontario on 13-September-2003 with Josh (Oakes) and Scott (Publican).

Wow, what a great beer this is! Great toasted brown colour, nice combination of rostiness and bitterness in the aroma. The body is robust and creamy without being overbearing. The flavour perfectly combines the toasty chocolate nuttiness of a great porter with the dry, woody hops of a great pale ale. If this is Perry's idea of punishment, I can't even begin to imagine his idea of pleasure!

Tap: Medium brown colored ale with nice head with good retention. Aroma is quite bitter and strong malt can already be detected. Taste is bitter as expected though not as much as I would have thought but I also found out it was much more creamy then expected. Very good mouthfeel with good body and carbonation.

Very bitter, with some feastures that remind me some English BRown Ales. Gives the impression of having just a few grains. With copper features in the foam in taste too.

On tap at Cafe Volo (which is a great little place on yonge btw). Deep mahogany colour and a nice white sudsy lace make for a good looking beer. A BIG roasted malt, nutty aroma. Huge hop explosion throughout, crisp, citrusy. Reasonably balanced too. I'm looking forward to having this stuff again, it's just too bad that it isn't more widely available.

Mahogany in colour, long lasting fair sized beige head, good lacing. The aroma was muted because it was served very cold but as it warmed caramel malts, citrus and floral hops started coming through. The flavour wasn’t as hoppy as I expected this to be, maybe brewing this at Heritage has something to do with that. This did have some caramel sweetness, chocolate, earth, some pine, orange citrus. Fairly bitter mouthfeel, medium body, medium carbonation. Finishes long with a mild lingering bitterness. Still pretty good but didn’t live up to my expectations.

Draught at <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/ontario/toronto target=blank>Volo in Toronto, Ontario.
