Commercial Description:
Our new bitter brown ale, Corporal Punishment, is our most complex beer to date. This ale is a wonderfully bitter, incredibly malty and nicely hoppy brew. Amber and Dark Crystal malts, and Willamette and Challenger hops are used in this 5.3 percent alcohol, 84 International Bittering Units (that’s right, 84 IBU) ale. A rich mahogany in colour, this ale blends flavours of fresh bitter coffee, dry caramel and nuttiness with light dry chocolate, woody hop and citric notes.

On tap at Magpie - came with a decent sized bone white head which stayed around in one form or another throughout the glass. Beer itself a deep copper colour when held up to the light (candle). Aroma actually quite similar to the Sgt. Major. Taste, though, that’s where it all comes into place......some earthiness, light chocolate notes, a tad of sweetness, and hazelnut; but mainly lots of really quality malt and grassy/citrusy hops......and then the finish.....waves and waves of bitterness, but not unpleasant in any way, just the perfect finale. A really complex beer with all sorts of stuff happening at different times, and the whole is much more than the sum of its excellent parts. A combination of three beers, really - a brown ale, a very strong bitter, and an IPA. Perry is widely considered to be one of the most intriguing and adventurous brewers in Ontario (alongside Black Oak), and this beer, the second I’ve had from Scotch Irish, cements that reputation and makes me crave more.

341ml Bottle: Corporal, what have they done to you?! If there was ever any doubt this brewery sadly misses Perry it ends with this bottle. One of Ontario’s greatest ales is a shadow of it’s former self. Pours dark brown, good head, very nice lacing. The aroma is sour, almost rancid, prominent over mild faceless hops and malts. The taste seems infected, sour, with a metallic tang. Very bitter, but no character. Just tangy, sour bitterness. Perry come back! Original Rating from December 28, 2007 on Draught @ TFOB: Poured rich brown, a thin layer of head. Hoppy and floral aroma with hints of sweet malts. The taste is incredible - some cocoa and sweet malts off the top and followed by some great balanced hopping, so pleasing to the palate. This was one of my introductions to Perry’s beers and he never lets me down, I just wish his stuff was more readily available to the average consumer. Great stuff! 8/4/8/4/16

Cask at Volo Cask Days, October 2008. Pours golden. Floral aroma has a hint of caramel, butter, some grass. This is nicely balanced: bitter hops with apricot give way to caramel malt, a small nuttiness with some citrus, then underlying oak.

Sampled at the Arrow & Loon, Ottawa Dark copper, almost bronze red, with a clingy head. Grainy smell, the hops come through with a very herbal twang. Malty taste and just a little sweet at first, with an excellent bitterness and long mouthfeel. An good session brew.

Bottle. Pours clear amber with a small head. Short retention. Nose is hoppy bitter. Lots of malt, quite sweet. Taste is bitter, malty. A bit roasty. Earthy hops. Little hint of butter here and there. Starting to get a bit more butter now. A bit disappointing.

Don’t know if this was a bad bottle. But this was way off from what I was expecting. Taste was bitter coffee. I didn’t detect very much else.
