Beer itself a deep copper colour when held up to the light (candle). Aroma actually quite similar to the Sgt. Major. Taste, though, that’s where it all comes into place......some earthiness, light chocolate notes, a tad of sweetness, and hazelnut; but mainly lots of really quality malt and grassy/citrusy hops......and then the finish.....waves and waves of bitterness, but not unpleasant in any way, just the perfect finale. A really complex beer with all sorts of stuff happening at different times, and the whole is much more than the sum of its excellent parts. A combination of three beers, really - a brown ale, a very strong bitter, and an IPA. Perry is widely considered to be one of the most intriguing and adventurous brewers in Ontario (alongside Black Oak), and this beer, the second I’ve had from Scotch Irish, cements that reputation and makes me crave more. Aroma of toast, nuts, woody hops, amaretto and lemon. Rich, almost pungent bitterness (cabrales!!). Almondy notes, bark, dark chocolate. The finish has toasted hops, minerals, and a dry woody character. An assertive American amber that does not fit neatly into any style. I have to admit, first Perry made the vile weed taste good and now he’s made a beer with a billion IBUs that are compensated for with crystal malts taste good. (Hats off to John Graham, too, for his work on this kick ass brew!) OKBeer (1159), Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

Dark bronze amber colour with a frothy off-white head. Bready, light caramel, green and fresh pine and grapefruit aroma. Brown bread, caramel, and brown sugar flavours quickly meet the fresh pine and grapefruit finish. Medium to full bodied. CapFlu (3494), Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

Love the Corporal with the cricket bat in his hand - very menacing-looking dude! Pour a thin, shave cream head and a mahogany body. Very hoppy nose with hints at bitterness... seemingly in reflection to the Corporal's mannerisms. Strong hop taste with a chocolate malt hinting. Very bitter finish. Lasting creaminess. Performed a side-by-side tasting with the Scotch Irish IPA and this beer is much more hoppy and bitter; the IPA almost tastes cask conditioned by comparison (more mild flavour and subtle complexity). Love to get more paddle-whacks by the Corporal! BBB63 (4274), La Porte, Indiana, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 2, 2003 Beautiful reddish/brown hue with a small off-white head. Roasted malt, hazelnut, milk chocolate, floral, woody and smokey aroma. Tart hoppy initial taste, some caramel malt comes on to balance the brew. Very bitter and coffee dry finish. Medium-bodied with a chewy and lively mouthfeel. Hint of alcohol feel. A above average brown that is a testament to the brewmaster art. Recommended. Boutip (2404), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada

Aroma is quite bitter and strong malt can already be detected. Taste is bitter as expected though not as much as I would have thought but I also found out it was much more creamy then expected. Very good mouthfeel with good body and carbonation. GRM (1291), Aylmer, Quebec, Canada

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 7, 2009 341 mL stubby. Brown with a ring of head. Lots of caramel and nuts in the aroma. Tonnes of malt and tonnes of bitterness in the flavour. The hops must go in early, though, because there’s not a lot of flavour from the hops, and even less aroma. There’s also quite a bit of chocolate in there, along with come espresso. I’ve been drinking this on tap for a while, and I have to admit that I had no idea that this beer is only 4.3% It tastes so much bigger. Great beer.
