Commercial Description:
Our new bitter brown ale, Corporal Punishment, is our most complex beer to date. This ale is a wonderfully bitter, incredibly malty and nicely hoppy brew. Amber and Dark Crystal malts, and Willamette and Challenger hops are used in this 5.3 percent alcohol, 84 International Bittering Units (that’s right, 84 IBU) ale. A rich mahogany in colour, this ale blends flavours of fresh bitter coffee, dry caramel and nuttiness with light dry chocolate, woody hop and citric notes.

Bottle.Clear golden with a thick off-white head with good retetnion and lacing. Aroma is brown malt, toasted malt, and earthy notes. Flavor is toasted malt, weird burnt flavor, metal and earthy notes with a bitter finish.

341 mL bottle. Pours amber with very little head. Aroma is a bit roasty and earthy. Flavour starts with a bitter coffee and then turns a bit sour - finishes long and bitter. Not bad, but I was expecting quite a bit more given the high ratings frankly.

Bottle. Amber beer with a weird powder cocoa aroma. Flavour starts with a sour tinge moving to a sharp off-bitterness with an undercurrent of coca. Chocolate runs through the middle. Coffee notes in the finish. Strong hop aftertaste. Complex for a low ABV. Gets tastier as you go.

Don’t know if this was a bad bottle. But this was way off from what I was expecting. Taste was bitter coffee. I didn’t detect very much else.

Bottled sample. Deep amber in colour with medium carbonation. Malty milk chocolate aromas upfront, along with citrusy undertones. Tastes a bit like a Terry’s chocolate orange, but with some earhty+herbal hops thrown in for good measure. Light mouthfeel and moderate bitterness. Fairly refreshing for a brown ale. Somewhat British bitter-like.

341 ml bottle from LCBO, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass. NO05/08.

App.: Clear medium copper with a fair tan head. Aroma: Tangy, sour, infected, nutty, hints of fruit and a little earthy hops. Palate: Medium body and fairly soft carbonation. Flav.: Still tangy, sour and infected with some nuttiness, light fruitiness and a little bread crust; on swallowing, it is thin and acrid with out of balance bitterness.

I suspect that something is wrong. This has defects I’ve noted in their other products. A shame, because I bet Perry would have done it well.

Clear brown amber with tan foamy head. Roasted nutty coffee aroma. Smooth dry bitterness, so much so it almost evaporates in the mouth. Dry vanilla, toffee and woody nut flavour with a woody after-taste. An acquired taste that I have yet to acquire.

341 mL stubby. Brown with a ring of head. Lots of caramel and nuts in the aroma. Tonnes of malt and tonnes of bitterness in the flavour. The hops must go in early, though, because there’s not a lot of flavour from the hops, and even less aroma. There’s also quite a bit of chocolate in there, along with come espresso. I’ve been drinking this on tap for a while, and I have to admit that I had no idea that this beer is only 4.3% It tastes so much bigger. Great beer.
