AmEricanbrew (1747), Louisiana, USA Nov 7, 2007 .5 liter bottle bottled on Jan. 4- 2001. The pop top bottle pours a beautiful clear garnet color. Thin head and very little carbonation. . Smells of candy sugars, sweet brown raisons, with bread and yeast, like a fresh baked cinnimon roll. Has a sweet raison taste surrounded by a dry, almost sour port wine flavor.Medium bodied with a flat mouth feel. Finishes with an appropriate alcohol taste on the breath.
oh, the joy of aged beers.
motelpogo (4394), Plzen, Czech Republic Feb 13, 2005 bottle - tasting in the vaults of hi international seattle. not particularly distinctive - brownish amber, toffee aroma, some vanilla and sultanas, quite sweet, soft, not bad Sickboy282 (1098), San Diego, California, USA Sep 8, 2004 Pours a deep coludy auburn/brown with no head. Aromas of a semidry chardonnay and a muskiness. Flavor is slightly nbitter with flavors of nuts, honey, apple/pear juice and a light smokiness. A decent barleywine. DaSilky1 (1932), San Diego, California, USA Sep 6, 2004 reddish muddy brown..smells very vinious, hinting at a semi-dry chardonney with some oak cask and sour grape touches...very vinious, white wine and cork-like flavors with a little maltiness behind it. No hoppiness really save a faint whisper of bitterness in the finish... Aurelius (2643), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Aug 12, 2004 2000 vintage, found in the deep recesses of a friend’s fridge. Deep brown, murky coloring, not much head, good latchkey bottle, lots of sludge in the bottom after 5 years or so. Complex flavor and aroma -- tannic, bocky malt, fruit, bitter wood, raisins, plums, nuts. Warming without an ABV assault. Long, tangy bitter finish with the west coast hops. Mouth was a bit light. A conversation piece, but not terribly enjoyable. duff (5474), Surrey, Greater London, England Jun 25, 2004 Bottle-In the vaults of HI International. Milk chocolate, sweet malty and smooth, not particularly robust. Some sherbert and vanilla, sugary aswell. Smooth, perhaps a little too smooth. presario (2953), Calgary, Alberta, Canada Jan 1, 2004 Burnt raisan and plum aroma. Reddish brown. The worst barley wine I have tasted. Perhaps a barley wine lambic. Tastes like lemon juice and vinegar. I think that this is what Christ drank on the cross. nstal (237), Houston, Texas, USA Mar 13, 2003 I just moved to the Seattle area about 3 weeks ago. This stuff is brewed about 10 miles from my apartment. It comes in a cool looking brown bottle with a painted on label and one of those pop tops that I first saw on a bottle of grolsch. Deep red color. Initially on the pour there was very little head and only a few very large bubbles, but then the CO2 came blasting through and formed a nice smooth 2" head. Unfortunately it didn't last very long, but that's expected for the style. The bottle boasts of "black currant character," and it's definitely there, almost too much at first. But as the beer warms and mellows, the sweet malts help balance the flavor. Reminds me of an alcoholic version of a black currant juice drink I had in London last summer. BTW, this was from the 2000 batch.
