Sea Dog Old East India Pale Ale

Bottle 12 oz. Dark amber color with a medium head that diminished quickly. Medium aroma of hops and citrus. Medium body with hoppy texture. Mild flavor of hops and citrus with medium bitter finish.

color is a little deeper than the typical IPA (not that it matters in the rating), head was light beige. aroma and flavor were of mild lightly citrusy, moderately earthy hops. brown sugar and caramel were the major constituents of the aroma and flavor..fairly tasty, but damn, it’s an IPA, i want my hops.

Had this one bottled. A decent pale ale, although way off from IPA standards. Deep amber color, thin head, thin mouthfeel, quite hoppy although not nearly as much as I like, actually a bit too malty, notes of caramel and apple. Not terrible.

Lightly hazy amber body topped by a medium pillowy manila head.Lace seems to be nice (maybe my glass is just dirty). The aroma is that of light plastic, flowery, and a touch of sweet. The flavor is hugely flowery and sweet. Tastes like they used lots of fuggles in this one, It has a definite English gestalt. The palate is medium. Decent though the floweriness begins to taste more and more like plastic the more and more that I drink,

2005 bottle. Brassy-copper/gold appearance, clear with a moderate amount of white head, some retention. No lacing. Aroma of pale malts, sweet honey and light hay and grains. Some spicy notes in the nose. Flavor is more sweet malts, grassy and spicy soft hops. Some sweet dough, low to moderate carbonation, bit of wateriness, but otherwise nothing wrong here, just needs a bit more malt complexity and even a stronger hops presence. Drinkable enough for what it is, assuming it’s just a lighter session IPA. This isnt bottle conditioned (not an ale on lees).

now this was a dissapointment. Another from the montreal international beer fest. went up to the stand. Said "Most Bitter,"She said "East I.P.A?" I said "Shure." Bad choice bad bad choice. For me anyways. Pours light amber, amost golden amber, if that makes any sence. small head, amost no carbonation. aroma is malty, sweet hints, touches of pepper, strange blend of bitter and floral hops.Body is medium thick. Flavour is of floral hop, grassy almost bready malt. Sweet touches round out the flavour, over powering most of the bitter hop, to the point that it’s only barley detectable. aftertaste is yeasty, "On Lees" as they say in quebec, sweet tones, serious fuel notes. Good try, but not good enough. Oh well. Cheers

From a 12oz. bottle, best by Feb 2004. Pours a sparkly, light amber with a half inch of head. Nursed this one for about an hour and the a nice head remained, some lace but quickly dissipates. Smells of hops, pepper and cinnamon. Taste is sweet and malty but quickly gives you a strong bit of hops. I found it extremely hoppy but that may just be because heavily hopped brews are difficult to come by in Maine. A medium body with legs, aftertaste lingers on the palette for several minutes. Certainly drinkable but a bit too hoppy to be truly smooth. A very good product from an underappreciated brewer (at least within Maine.)

Pours a reddish straw color, small head and very little carbonation. Aroma is malty, mild hop pepper. Less hoppy on the nose than any other example of the style I have tried. Flavor is not so good. Fairly chemical and astringent. Hop flavor seems mostly artificial, malts are ok. Definitely more of an english take on the style,but something just seems wrong here.
