Tastes rich and spicy with light hops underneath the malt. Touch of alcohol bite. Bitter and creamy. Smooth finish. Sticky mouthfeel with a light hoppy aftertaste. Just as good as I remembered it from last year.
One of the most smooth, drinkable winter ales out there. I’m glad it’s back.

Light malt, somewhat cardboardish aroma. Light spice in the flavor with a bit of diacetyl. Decent. MartinT (5075), Montreal, Quebec, Canada
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Mar 6, 2004 Lympathic diacetyl over empathic hop spiciness...Sympathetic earthy malt feel couples with light citrus because it is lacking in its endemic flavors...Chalk dust and slight astringency surface in the end along with a soulless, impotent bitterness comeback... walrus (13), USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 26, 2004 The only complaint is that the higher alcohol takes away from the broad, complex but smooth taste. A little spicey ... typical of Sea Dog is that they are all well balanced with no rough edges. In this case the alcohol content messed that up a little bit. I still like it very much. Taste of bark, chocolate, chestnuts and acorns. Like being plunged face first into a pile of leaves that have basted in straight alcohol. Better than typical Holiday brew. Crisp, clean, dry finish. jah noth (1020), Rochester, New York, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 24, 2003 For a strong ale this is rather weak but for a stock ale this is very nice. Nice auburn color with a nice upfront amount of caramel maltiness. Some sourness in the middle and a clean, dry finish. Enjoyable, absolutely. guzzler67 (1286), Hanover, Maryland, USA
