hopdog (5533), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 24, 2008 12oz bottle acquired in trade with odeed (thanks!). Poured a dark brown color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of chocolate, roast, cocoa powder, and nutty. Tastes of bitter chocolate, roast, caramel, and light coffee. A pretty nice schwarzbier. pepsican (884), The Student Ghetto, Iowa, USA Jun 10, 2008 Left at my house by iowaherkeye...hope he doesn’t see this rating and figure out I drank this....Pours almost black with a medium sized tan head. Aroma is roasted caramel and some chocolate. Flavor was more roasted caramel, chocolate, some smoke and nuts. Finishes a little thin, dry. Bitterness peaks around 2. GeneralGao (3051), Iowa City, Iowa, USA May 26, 2008 12oz bottle from heemer77. Thanks Eric. Poured a deep dark brown color with orange highlights. The head was light tan and left a little lace behind. Aroma was of milk chocolate and molasses. Medium bodied and sweet with roasted malt, chocolate, and molasses flavors. There was a hint of bitterness toward the end. Not bad at all. IrishBoy (2686), Bakersfield, California, USA Apr 25, 2008 12 oz bottle from Country Club Liquors; Nose of light chocolate, roastiness, nutiness, and a light vanilla note; clear very dark brown with rouge edges and a small beige head; flavor has chocolate, coffee, and some very light hop bitterness. Not too bad for a local brew! iowaherkeye (1832), Bakersfield, California, USA Jan 26, 2008 Another brew thanks to Eric (heemer77). Looks black unless up to light--clear deep ruby with a 1/2 finger beige head, fading to a ring before long. Aroma of roasted malts and a little bit of acidic coffee and hints of milk chocolate. A little bit roastier than the aroma had led on with some light piney hop notes--I thought I did smell that in the aroma, but wasn’t sure enough of myself to put it in the rating. Not picking up on as much chocolate, though. Just a hint of soy is noted toward the semi dry ashy finish. Bitterness around a 3. Low carbonation with a medium body. Pretty decent brew. heemer77 (4294), Savannah, Missouri, USA Jan 21, 2008 Bottled, purchased at Johncy’s in North Liberty, IA. This is the second time I have picked up a relatively obscure California brew at this store. Black with garnet highlights at the edges. Light brownish khaki head. Toasted almonds and milk chocolate come out in the aroma. I also get a fruity hint of blueberries. The taste is day old coffee with some cheap chocolate chips. There is a dry, woody finish with some tobacco. A decent brew, but nothing special. bhensonb (4187), Woodland, California, USA Jan 21, 2008 Bottle. Black in color with ruby glints. Decent tan head. Thin to medium body with soft, voluminous carbonation. It tastes toasted. More sweet than bitter. Something porter like with coffee and chocolate. There’s some hop, so the finish is roughly balanced. It is not all that sweet, and the finish is reasonably dry. Perhaps too tasty for the style, but it is a very good lager. kp (8400), Woodstock, Georgia, USA Dec 12, 2007 Date: 12/04/2007
