Wegro (218), Fresno, California, USA Apr 27, 2009 A big malty smoky thick thing. has a load of pine in the flavor, nice smoke. seems nitro but not too bad in that regard. boozy after taste. very good overall, didn’t get to try the reserve though!
Aesir (127), California, USA May 5, 2005 Deep red brown color, not much head. The big malt flavor leaves the impression of chewing on a loaf of caramel bread and the double digit ABV lets you know that this beer was done right. Give me another loaf!!1 Finishes with a nice liquor zing. aspidites (1274), manteca, California, USA Mar 14, 2005 very balanced scotch ale. Nice roasted caramel and bready malt. Some toffee and lit choclate notes. Somewhat brandyish and warming. Good mouthfeel with nice conditioning. Clean finish with some tea leaves and biscuit characters. flutetokill (515), Fresno, California, USA Feb 12, 2005 Updated: Mar 13, 2005Opaque reddish brown color with a small tan head. Lightly sweet aroam. Very sweet grape, pine, and malt flavors. Medium dry finish.
Reserve:Much sweeter caramel and malt aroma and flavor. Pine is still present, but much more mild. A much better version. redave (133), squaw valley, California, USA Feb 5, 2005 Dark not as "scotchy" as i thought it would be (somewhat smokey)
Last years tasted better this year. loweredsixth (942), Fresno, California, USA Feb 5, 2005 Deep, dark brown color with ruby highlights, opaque, with a small off-white head. The aroma was slightly piney...sweet, bready tones. The flavor was very sweet, caramel, bread/dough, sweet grapes (?) and a slight alcohol character. The feel was very thick, soft with a wet finish.
Also at the brewery was the year-old version of this beer (called "Scotch Reserve.") The alcohol was at 9% that year. Everything was intensified...very sweet, very piney, very bready. Large/robust aroma and flavor. I liked this version much better. The numbers are from an average of both.
