The aroma is musty and floral with some notes of oak, distant pie-crust, and a subtle honey sweetness. The flavor is a lovely, nuanced honey with some very interesting floral hints. Oak is obvious but subdued, which gives a slight vanilla character. I don’t get the cherry the description suggests, but I do get notes of mango, papaya, dried pineapple, and maybe even kiwi. But the fruitiness is very well balanced against the other elements. The sweet finish lingers for a little while, but doesn’t give the slightest hint of alcohol. I’m very impressed with this one. Definitely my favorite of the Shady Grove meads so far.

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 1, 2008 375 ml. Lightly hazy yellow-golden and still. Aromas of musty grapes, spicy wood and maybe a hint of berries. Flavor is fresh white grape juice with some unidentified earth spices - must be the nutmeg, but I never would have known without the commercial description. There is a pleasant finish of sweet-spicy white grape, nutty-rice, rich and earthy vanilla, wood, and slight citrus. The light body is well-dried on the finish and has a nice little chest-warming to it, though the alcohol is well-hidden in the flavors. This is definitely (as intended) a dessert drink and was a pleasant surprise.
