hopdog (5527), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 13, 2006 Hand bottled sample from the brewer via Weeare138 (thanks!). Poured a medium brownish color with an averaged to smaller sized off white head. Aromas of yeast, spices (I got mostly cardamon and corriander), light sugar, and light alcohol. Tastes of spices, caramel, perfume, and lighter fruity tastes. Thinner body with a light alcohol finish. weeare138 (933), Collegeville, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 12, 2006 Much thanks to grassrootsvt for this hand bottled beer from the brewer!
Appears a dark amber with a lush off white head that falls into a thick collar and leaves nice lacing all around the glass.
Smell is of a true Belgian brew with some nice perfumey spices of cardamom and coriander. Perhaps a hint of cinnamon as well.
Taste is of a Belgian hybrid that has been spiced nicely. A tiny bit of perfume but a well done brew.
Mouthfeel is of a peppery spicyness that highlights that aforementioned spices. The only thing that would make this better(just IMO) is a bit more sugary malts to mellow out the wonderful spices that jump out a bit too much like a chef that accidently put just a tad too much in at once. Personally, I like spice though. The greatness is there though. Mild tweaking will make this one a completely insane kickass brew.
The abv is slightly noticeble but again, with careful tweaking, this has potential to be a world class brew. TomDecapolis (3130), Skippack, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 12, 2006 Thanks to weeare138. Hand bottled from the brewer. Pours a hazy brown amber with a small off white lacing head. Aroma of belgian yeast and various spices. Flavors of the same. Picking up some of the spices, almost floral a little watery. (Rating #401) muzzlehatch (4427), Burlington, Vermont, USA Dec 31, 2005 Sampled at the brewpub with beerbuzzmontreal, MartinT, tiggmtl, Rastacouere and Yowie in early December. Cloudy red-brick with little head...fruity, bark and herb-laden nose, somewhat old rather than fresh....the body is herbal and fruity (cherry, apricot) up front, becomes very dry and spicy late, with some unpleasantly strong mineralic qualities towards the finish that make it rather hard to drink. Interesting rather than good, and along with other samples that day a sign that maybe the water being used at the Shed is a bit too harsh... Rastacouere (5551), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Dec 26, 2005 Deep russet , headless. Hugely spicy nose travels from roots to tree bark in a grassy ballpark. Interesting original aromatics, the spices showdown usually seem to work better for me when, like here, there are darker flavours like that tartish earthiness to balance minty bouquet and leathery fruitiness. Appears quite mineral in mouth, where the hop lackings grow more obvious. Mild in flavours with grainy character taking more and more room. Yeasty, minty and rosemary-like, it nevertheless grows a bit cloying and once warm, alcohol becomes a factor. Light-medium bodied, quickly fading carbonation. An inviting aroma whose life isn’t helped by poorly distributed carbonation and chaotic flavour disposition. tiggmtl (4307), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Dec 22, 2005 Pine, rosemary, spicy aroma. Clear, very dark amber brown with a slight, white, fully diminishing ring of head. Herbal pine, haylike hops and coriander tones to the sweet flavour with some light fruitiness. Light body with somewhat low carbonation and minerallic aftertaste. Sampled on tap at the brewpub with beerbuzzmontreal, MartinT, muzzlehatch, Rastacouere and Yowie. beerbuzzmontreal (2909), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Dec 8, 2005 Clear dark amber pour with no head. Aroma and flavor of spices and sweetness, it is unpleasantly alcoholic and mineral. The mouthfeel feels flat.
