Densely malty aroma with a little cigarette smoke, burnt caramel and brown sugar, touch of breakfast maple syrup and a dash of butterscotch. Perhaps a splash of berry. Murky mahogany pour with a rocky, dense, creamy beige head. Taste is, again, big malt with a bit of cigarette ash and berry, touches of sweet and citrus but on the whole very dry. Medium body with a sometimes lightish mouthfeel, aftertaste is dry nudging up to rubbery. Vague tea-like or cotton-balled finish. Indeed, an interesting experience. Pours a deep amber, slight haze, with a small lasting off white head. Aroma is nutty, smooth sweet caramel malts, hints of toffee, and a tea-like herbal hop hint. Good full flavor, nutty and caramel again but light hints of smoke, pine needle, tea, and some gummy yeasty dirtiness in the background. Pretty smooth overall. kp (8500), Woodstock, Georgia, USA

Malty and roasty with an excellent mouthfeel but could have been a bit drier for my taste. This one started off good straight from the fridge, but improved greatly as it warmed. kramer (2488), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 13, 2007 22 oz bottle. Pours a clear garnet colored body under a foamy one finger beige head that left some sticky lacing. Very light visible carbonation. The aroma is malt dominated with an interesting mix of toasted malt, light smoke, peat, bacon, and a little beef jerky. Just a light hint of hops. The malt is center stage on the flavor too. Nice dry toasted and slightly husky crystal malt with a light hint of smoke and hops on the finish. Late lingering peat flavor with a touch of coffee. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a dry grainy husky texture and moderate soft carbonation. Finishes a little sticky. Overall, this was a really good beer. Quite a nice surprise. notalush (2684), Denver, Colorado, USA
