Murky dark chestnut; sweet aroma like toffee braised with cheap sherry. Loads of butterscotch. Quite sweet, fruity (mango, gooseberries w/ sugar). Hint of maple in the finish, again with loads of butterscotch.

On tap at The Great Lost Bear:
Minty herbal freshness hangs on to the baccate sweetness...Some roastiness clings on to the delicate caramel malts, finishing up in a yeasty brush...A distinct and original scottish ale...

Bottle at PilsnerPeter’s Ratebeer Spring Gathering. Deep amber beer, thin head. The aroma is lightly molassesey with a touch of soft toasted wheat. Light brown malts, a touch of caramelized sugar and a light sweet plumminess. Flavour is less sweet than the aroma suggests. Nice light maltiness, a touch of dark fruit and a bit of cocoa as well. It’s pretty good, really.

Draught pint sampled at Great Lost Bear in Portland ME with the illuminating and ruminating ClarkVV. Hazy-dirty nearly opaque brown with a bit of creamy head...some dried wood in the nose and a bit of caramel, fairly weak and simple on the whole...sugary-sweet body (Clark said "dry shaggy carpet" and I have no idea what he meant, please explain now when sober) bit of acidic grapiness, burnt brown sugar and marmalade. Not awful, I guess.

On draught at the Great Lost Bear, 5/21/2005 with Muzzlehatch. Moderately dark brown/mahogany with some reddish-copper tinges, small off-white head, recedes to ring quickly, no lacing. Very odd aroma of glue, rubber, wool, chocolate and freshly varnished wood, or maybe it’s all just toasted almonds and I’m crazy. As Barry points out, I said it tasted like "dry shag carpet" and frankly I’m baffled, so sorry for not being able to explain, Barry. Anyways, the body was medium, rather watery, low carbonation, with light chocolate/toffee notes, bits of vinousness and more of that odd coffee and glue and nuts. Must be the yeast. . .Really strange take on a really vague "style" from a really strange brewer. I think I kept having sips from Barry’s glass more out of curiousity than from actual enjoyment.
