Commercial Description:
What it's like: World Champion American Ale, 1998 World Beer Championships. Big Meadows is brewed as an American-style India Pale Ale using a classic American hop, Cascades. The result is a full-bodied, moderately bitter beer with a prominent hoppy flavor and aroma. The beer is named for the Big Meadows area of Shenandoah National Park. Who it's for: Big Meadows will appeal to anyone looking for a full-bodied beer with a lot of flavor but that is not too heavy or dark. This is our most popular beer. The alcohol content by volume is 6.2 percent.

A hazy orange beer with a lazing light beige head. The aroma is sweet and slightly hoppy, but also with a light malty note. The flavor is sweet with a crisp malt note, leading to a dry nice bitter finish.

Nice copper body, strong caramelly malt aroma. Sweet, mostly mild malt, though there’s a slightly citric flavor. Hint of bitterness in the aftertaste.

Bottle... Clear, deep golden ale with a mid-sized, creamy, white head. Very good retention. The aroma is peppery, earthy and citric. Malty-sweet flavor. Caramel, toffee and spicy hops, but not enough for balance. Medium-bodied with a tannic mouthfeel and lively carbonation. Sweet and then, suddenly dry finish. More English than American in my book. Not a very strong offering, but not at all offensive. It’s beer!

12oz bottle-pours a foamy retaining light tan head and copper color. Aroma is perfumy/spicy-hops, medium malt-some caramel. Taste is perfumy/spicy hops with some bitterness, earthy/wood. Medium malt-some caramel, grain/hay. OK carbonation. 3.1 Don’t know/didn’t know if this was bottle conditioned, but the second half was hazy copper and the taste was better, adjusting this to 3.4

Bottle drank at the RFD with Ungstrup Amber color, light head and lacing. Nose of light hop and malt, citrusy. The flavor is grassy, nice and floral, a bit held back, but decent.

Draught: This beer has bulging muscles and a hairy chest. Full-bodied to say the least. Bitter aftertaste lingers on the roof of your mouth. Warm alcohol sensation in the throat. Some barleywine characteristics. As a friend of mine (Phil) described, ’it’s like a strong scottish ale.’ This beer carries with it a sweet, malty flavor, balanced with a hoppy bitterness. In a way, it’s kinda like Tupper’s Hop Pocket’s ’big brother.’ This beer really wakes you up, right before knocking you out. Bottle: Not quite as appealing as the draught version, but still a worthy beer.

Cloudy dark amber body with a small off-white head. Sweet floral hops aroma with some caramel and dark malt. Sweet malty flavor with caramel and light bitter ending.
