egajdzis (2947), Terrapin, Pennsylvania, USA May 15, 2008 Poured a dark mahogany color with a small, light tan head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of vanilla, oats, light caramel, roasted malts, and some chocolate. Taste of roasted malts, chocolate, light smoke, vanilla, nuts, and caramel. Creamy but thin mouthfeel.
The_Beer_God (2827), Newport News, Virginia, USA May 31, 2008 Bottle courtesy of kmweaver. Thanks Ken! Dark brown. Opaque. Small tan head. Nose is woody, roasted malts, dark chocolate, and caramel. Taste is soft vanilla, roasted malts, light coffee, chocolate covered peanuts and roasted malts. Light wood here as well. The body has a bubbly but dense carbonation. Seems rather smooth. Medium overall feel that’s chewy in spots. The finish exudes more roasted malts, soft nutty flavors, chocolate, caramel, light vanilla and wood. Rather tasty and easy on the barrel (in other words, it’s complimented rather than dominated the beer). hopdog (4525), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA May 17, 2008 12oz bottle acquired in trade with kmweaver (thanks!). Tasted side by side with the regular version. Poured a dark brown color wtih a small sized off white head. Aromas of wood, chocolate, earthy, roast, and some caramel. Tastes of vanilla, chocolate, roast, and nuts. Very similar to the regular version with the Oak aging being on the suble side. TomDecapolis (2389), Skippack, Pennsylvania, USA May 15, 2008 Thanks to hopdog. Pours a deep brown with amber notes and a very small bubbly off white head. Aroma of light chocolate, vanilla, light oak, caramel, toffee and some nuts. Flavor of roasted malt, earthy, caramel, woody and light vanilla and some nuts. Stine (1318), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Mar 19, 2008 Pours muddy brown and topped with a staying skin of tan cream. Aroma is very sweet and slightly falsified; mostly sweaty boot, milk chocolate, and a dominant, acidic sugar of cream soda. Caramelly. Flavor is much the same; mostly cream soda with plenty of rich oak tones of vanilla and coconut milk. Syrupy peach, moderate chocolate, raisin, and loose bourbon. Apples. Aromatic, overly sweet pipe tobacco smoke. Dried out red pit fruits. Palate is creamy and soft; medium but quite thin in body. Finishes with a wet, bland, mulchy malt flavor; quickly fading. As a stout it’s a failure; call it a pleasantly weird brown ale, and it has something unexpected to offer. Thanks Ken!
