beervana (782), Libertyville, Illinois, USA Feb 9, 2006 (02.04.06) On tap at RFD Washington, Washington, D.C. 12 oz brown bottle purchased from RFD Washington, Washington, D.C. Opaque black hued beer with small off-white head. Soy sauce and roasted malt aromas. Full bodied stout that starts with light malt sweetness and woody/toasted malt flavors. Some soy sauce notes. Finishes dry with light bitterness and roasted malt aftertaste. Smooth and creamy palette. Complex flavors resembling a bourbon cask conditioned ale but bottle does not mention any cask/aging. A very good drinkable stout. The mediocre reviews below from fellow ratebeerians are very surprising to me. Is it possible that Shenandoah changed their stout recipe by the time I got to this beer? radagast83 (1036), Springfield, Virginia, USA Feb 2, 2007 Roasted notes in the aroma, with a great chocolate, roasted nut flavor. Other people must have had bum batches, because the beer I had was excellent, and really reminded me of the Chocolate Donut Stout they make. I can only assume that the people rating this higher were the lucky ones that got the really good batches, because I really don’t understand the rating as it stands. I’m just glad I didn’t end up disapointed. alexanderj (1218), San Diego, California, USA Jul 4, 2007 Bottle; poured a dark brown with light brown head. Aroma was good with chocolate, roasted malt, coffee; slight sweetness and hops. A lot of carbonation evident and some acidity. Flavor was very enjoyable; chocolate, vanilla, caramel, molasses. Was presently surprised. maniac (1949), Richmond, Virginia, USA Sep 18, 2006 Dark black body with a small creamy light brown head. Sweet molassas and coffee aroma. Strong coffee flavor with some light chocolate in the end. blank (999), Washington, Washington DC, USA Dec 18, 2003 sweet smelling stout. a little light and thin, but a very drinkable stout. i can see how this would be a good starter stout.
