Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
First brewed in 1998 as a special @ 9.2% abv to celebrate Shepherd Neame's tricentenary. A cask version at 4.5% was also released. Was made a pasteurised bottle regular at 6.5% under the name 1698 Celebration Ale. Relaunched in March 2005 as a bottle conditioned strong ale @ 6.5% simply as 1698.
1698 is thrice hopped - hops are added three times during the brewing process which gives the beer a strong hop character. Serve lightly chilled and enjoy on its own or with game dishes, roast beef or even rich deserts.

Bottle, served cold: Pours pale amber with a nice medium sized head. Weak hoppy aroma. Flavour of malt and notes of fruit. Light to medium bodied. Fair bitter finish. OK ESB, but nothing special.

From the clear bottle it’s appearance is of course no surprise - clear amber with a hard won and short lived head. Smells of crystal malt and some medicinal characteristic which must be from at least one of the hop additions. Actually, it’s got an aroma that somehow reminds of Orval - maybe it’s a bit of olive, but doesn’t really inspire me the way Orval does. A little bitterness in the flavour, but it’s a little shallow and doesn’t quite carry the beer. The sweetness is a pretty good level, allowing the 500ml bottle to be finished without it being too cloying. For a 6.5% the body is quite light. Nice carbonation level. Weak toffee on the aftertaste. Surprised this is labelled as a bitter, because it seems a bit light in that department, but it’s still a reasonable drop.

A beautiful copper colour, but loses points as it has no head whatsoever! Light spice on the nose with hints of fruit, but still a bit lacking. Flavourwise it is medium bodied, with a reasonable hop presence, there is a bit of crisp acidity on the finish. I have to say I find this a bit bland & nondescript...nothing to shout about really.

Dark amber color, fairly small tan head. Served very cold unfortunately. Fresh hoppy scent. A whole lot of taste, fruity and with good bitterness. A bit bitter aftertaste.

Bottle, 500ml. An amber-coloured pour with particles of yeast, despite storing it upright and pouring carefully. Aromas of malt and cirtus fruits. A hoppy taste with some citrus, caramel and dough. Slightly sweet. Light to average carbonation. A nice hoppy finish. Nice enough, but a little boring to be honest.
