Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
First brewed in 1998 as a special @ 9.2% abv to celebrate Shepherd Neame's tricentenary. A cask version at 4.5% was also released. Was made a pasteurised bottle regular at 6.5% under the name 1698 Celebration Ale. Relaunched in March 2005 as a bottle conditioned strong ale @ 6.5% simply as 1698.
1698 is thrice hopped - hops are added three times during the brewing process which gives the beer a strong hop character. Serve lightly chilled and enjoy on its own or with game dishes, roast beef or even rich deserts.

Bottled:
Clear copper colour, mid-sized lacing head. Aroma is bitter almonds, soap and a little bit of caramel. Flavour has some dusty hops, caramel and a hint of liquorice. After taste is long and (too) alcohol bitter.

Golden copper color with a medium-sized white head that leaves small lacings. A light smell of malts, fudge, butterscotch, leafy hops and vegetables. Very faint floral note. Not very pleasant. The taste is somewhat sweet and malty with notes of butterscotch, earth, leaves, vegetables and some hops. Perhaps a fruity note or two. The finish is mildly bitter with faint notes of hops and sweetish alcohol. Medium body and medium level of carbonation. Boring and pointless with a rather bad composition. I can’t get around the strange aromas of leaves and and vegetables. Serving type: bottle (Copy of old Beer Advocate review)

Bottle 33 cl (didn´t seem to be bottle conditioned?). Amber colour. Toasted caramel malt, fruit, grass, metallic, a bit floral, english yeast profile, some alcohol. Bitter, dry finish. More bitter, dry and less sweet then the draught version.

Bottle. Dark, golden with white head. Malt and some grass? A touch of the alcohol. Low bitterness. A bit thin. Not bad but nothing special.

It poured a clear dark golden liquid with a medium sized white foam that left allot of lacing. It had a smell of grassy hops, hay, malt and something sweet. It tasted the same but also had some sugar. Thick liquid with a smooth mouthfeel. Easy to drink and had very little stingyness. Felt a bit like drinking tea with sugar.

Wee bottle 8C, 20091009! AR: caramel, (daim/syrup) AP: Reddish, creamy foam - mpstley diminsihing, F: heavy alcoholic (I predicted first that this one should end up as a 3), heavy hops, loads of bittness! After 5 minutes much better - caramel, and a bit oily feeling. the last clunk is the best!

Sweet orange on the aroma. Slightly sweet toffee in the mouth but less filling and certainly less hoppy than the description led me to believe. Takes on somewhat of a thin, metallic flavour for the finish. Not at all bad, though.

33cl bottle from Systembolaget. Beautiful copper colored beer, maltish aroma and thin layer of head that never goes away. Excellent balanced beer in taste, carmell and hop playing at the same time. One of the better english beers I’ve had in a long time.
