Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
First brewed in 1998 as a special @ 9.2% abv to celebrate Shepherd Neame's tricentenary. A cask version at 4.5% was also released. Was made a pasteurised bottle regular at 6.5% under the name 1698 Celebration Ale. Relaunched in March 2005 as a bottle conditioned strong ale @ 6.5% simply as 1698.
1698 is thrice hopped - hops are added three times during the brewing process which gives the beer a strong hop character. Serve lightly chilled and enjoy on its own or with game dishes, roast beef or even rich deserts.

50cl clear glass bottle. Slightly hazy copper colour, smallish off-white head with decent lacing. Low carbonation, oily mouth feel. The powered-up hops are immediately noticeable in the strong citric aroma (whereas other Shepherd Neame ales tend to smell of bready malts), and they’re coming through on the palate as well. Bitterness is moderate when the malts finally register, and does not linger, but the citric notes make this a refreshing if not terribly complex brew.

I like the combo of fruit and bitterness from the hops and the heat and oiliness from the high AVB. There’s caramel from the malts as well, ending up in quite a nice brew. Lifts from the std neame ales.

Clear light brown with a small white head. Aroma holds notes of caramel and dusty hops. Flavor is mainly sweet and toffee like with a latecomming outdrying abit harsh bitterness. All in all very drinkable though, when served chilled

Bottle. Pours a good dark amber colour with a medium white head. Hints of malt and caramel in the aroma. The taste is bitter sweet with plenty of hops and a medium body. The beer ends with a dry soft finish.
