Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
First brewed in 1998 as a special @ 9.2% abv to celebrate Shepherd Neame's tricentenary. A cask version at 4.5% was also released. Was made a pasteurised bottle regular at 6.5% under the name 1698 Celebration Ale. Relaunched in March 2005 as a bottle conditioned strong ale @ 6.5% simply as 1698.
1698 is thrice hopped - hops are added three times during the brewing process which gives the beer a strong hop character. Serve lightly chilled and enjoy on its own or with game dishes, roast beef or even rich deserts.

Clear amber with decent size bubbly head. Very strong aroma of earthy hops. Strong toffee malt and earthy hop bittersweet flavor. Hard carbonation. Spicy hop finish. Quite a difference between the first, bitter sip and the last, sweet sip.

Uni Staff Club Tasting 29/01/08 Nice amber/copper. Good head, thins to a rim around the edge of the glass. Aroma slightly dusty, faint fruits and citrus. Great malt weight, nice firm bitterness. Nice beer

Small creamy offwhite shiny lasting head. Amber body. Nutty malty aroma with spicy peppery hops, somewhat light. Sweet earthy roasted almonds taste with notes of honey and caramel and some fruitiness. Aftertaste is a dry earthy wooden version of the same, with spicy, peppery hopes. Very nice! (0.5l draft at the Rover, Göteborg.)

Dark Copper with a disappearing white head. The aroma features fruity citrus and berry fruit notes, a touch of caramel malt and minerally note. On the palate there is toffee malt, fruity and earthy hop, a peachy note, firm mouth feel, leading to a lasting bitter finish. Best Sheps beer I have ever had.

0.5 l bottle. Amber color with small head. Resiny and perfumed hops, biscuity and nutty maltiness and orange marmelade in the aroma. Pleasant bittersweet flavor with orange marmelade, fruity bitterness and caramelly complexity. Caramelly, biscuity, bitter and orangey finish. Balanced and pleasant, fairly rich flavor opposed to most of shepherd’s ales.

Shepherd Neame 1698 Celebration Ale is a very full bodied beer with a great filling and smooth taste. This English Strong Ale has a beautiful color and was served with a great head. I enjoyed two pints in Hong Kong while studying overseas.

(Draught at Bishop’s Arms, Vasagatan, Stockholm, 22 Jan 2008) Amber colour with frothy, white head. Fruity nose with notes of dark fruit, nuts and malt sweetness shining through. Malty, nutty taste with citrus, dark fruit, solid malt sweetness and nicely balanced bitternes in the finish. Nice and balanced, but on the sweetish side.
