Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
First brewed in 1998 as a special @ 9.2% abv to celebrate Shepherd Neame's tricentenary. A cask version at 4.5% was also released. Was made a pasteurised bottle regular at 6.5% under the name 1698 Celebration Ale. Relaunched in March 2005 as a bottle conditioned strong ale @ 6.5% simply as 1698.
1698 is thrice hopped - hops are added three times during the brewing process which gives the beer a strong hop character. Serve lightly chilled and enjoy on its own or with game dishes, roast beef or even rich deserts.

500ml Bottle- Copper coloured with a small white head. Malty and lightly hoppy aroma with a hint of toffee, caramel and peach. Not a very strong aroma but enough to notice. Nutty, malty taste which is slightly spicy and also features caramel and toffee. I quite like this. If only they brought back their bottle conditioned porter!

Comunque buona!

Bottle - Ye Olde Beverlie, Canterbury. 1698, one from Shepherd Neame that I have been looking for for quite some time, pours a dark amber with a fairly-sized white head. It was a tad too cold for me when first poured, but after allowing it to warm slightly the flavours developed nicely. However, I still found it lacking in the aroma department; faintly malty to partner a slight hoppiness. Flavours of sweet and roasted malts hit the tongue with an ample dose of nuttiness. A nice, smooth beer on the palate as well, yet not too thin and not too thick (despite a fairly high alcohol content).

Bottle at home ... Copper colour ... Sharp fruit hop nose ... Fruity with a little caramel malt ... tiny clove touch ... quite grapefruit and a bit bitter in linger... All round not to bad and better than id expected.

Red, clear. Crisp flavor, fruit and butterscotch. Pleasant hops. Aroma is much softer than the flavor.

Appearance: amber copper color, transparent. Medium head, consistent but low persistent. Aroma: intensive candy, nutty and toffee. The sweetness I remember me the honey, vanilla and butterscotch. Wood touches and fruity of peaches and apricots. Appetizing, softly hoppy. Flavor: candy malty, very nutty, toffee, vanilla and butter. Fruity of stone peaches, apricots, tangerines and peel grapefruits. Soft hoppy finish, but persistent. Smoky, woody, nutmeg and butterscotch aftertaste. Slightly liquory (6,5%), similar to whisky and old rum. Palate: medium body and silky texture. Low to medium carbonation. Relatively complex and balanced beer. Nice nutty touch. Very advisable.

Bottle, July 07. Cristal clear, deep, shinny bronce color with a medium, nice head. Aroma is strong caramel and toffee with some skunky notes (transparent bottle!). Taste is malty, slightly bittersweet, and a strong alcoholic burn for it´s abv. Palate is medium to full, alcohol too strong and a sweet aftertaste. A too alcoholic and uninspiring strong ale.
