Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
First brewed in 1998 as a special @ 9.2% abv to celebrate Shepherd Neame's tricentenary. A cask version at 4.5% was also released. Was made a pasteurised bottle regular at 6.5% under the name 1698 Celebration Ale. Relaunched in March 2005 as a bottle conditioned strong ale @ 6.5% simply as 1698.
1698 is thrice hopped - hops are added three times during the brewing process which gives the beer a strong hop character. Serve lightly chilled and enjoy on its own or with game dishes, roast beef or even rich deserts.

Bottle 500ml. Pours a burnt amber colour with a medium white head. Has aromas of malts and burnt toffee. This followed throught in to the taste, with the burnt toffee coming through in the aftertaste. The alcohol is not too imposing, although this could be deceptive if you’re driving. Good carbonation and fairly smooth on the palate. I had this chilled on a warm summer’s day and it was very refreshing.

Bottle, Old Bridge cellars, WA Delicate but rich malty and spicy aroma. Sweet malty background with an impressive amount of pommy flavour hopping. Very pleasant

This beer has a nice head and beautiful golden colour and a wonderful aroma. The flavour is very aromatic and round with a lot notes of fruit and flower. The bitterness is moderate, briefly leaving the impression that it should develop, but then it stops abruptly. A very tasty beer.

Draught at Bishops Arms, Lund, Sweden. Pours out in a clear amber colour, almost no foam. Butterscotch in the aroma. Fudge, diacetyl and grassy hops in the flavour. Full but rather lifeless body. Long and dense finish of metal, butterscotch, grass and leaves.

Keg (Kitty’s, Helsinki). Sweet aroma to start, and then a smack of honey hits you on the first taste. As it goes down the full bodied strong malty ale taste comes through.

Bottled in clear glass. This was very subdued and drab. Amber-brown with a shortlasting head. Some malt and summer fruits in the aroma, with a bit more malt in the flavour and a dryish finish. Nothing to write home about.

Bottle. Tasty, if a bit fizzy. Nice and fruity, solid sweet malt, hops less prominent than I expected but a well balanced and very drinkable pint.
