Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
First brewed in 1998 as a special @ 9.2% abv to celebrate Shepherd Neame's tricentenary. A cask version at 4.5% was also released. Was made a pasteurised bottle regular at 6.5% under the name 1698 Celebration Ale. Relaunched in March 2005 as a bottle conditioned strong ale @ 6.5% simply as 1698.
1698 is thrice hopped - hops are added three times during the brewing process which gives the beer a strong hop character. Serve lightly chilled and enjoy on its own or with game dishes, roast beef or even rich deserts.

An amber beer with a thin orangey head. The aroma is sweet malty with primary notes of caramel, but also light notes of hops, served quite cold on draft, which kills some of the potential aroma. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of caramel with some odd hop notes combined with butterscotch, leading to a dry bitter finish. Not my hop sort.

(Bottle 50 cl) Clear, very pretty nutty colour with a handsome, tall and bubbly head leaving lots of laces. Unusually potent for an ESB, but in spite of a good and rounded body, the alcohol isn’t really too present. Nutty maltiness with an underlying sweetness and some good, bitter hops in the finish. 150502

Bottled at Fox & Anchor, Karlskrona. Clear amber, rocky head. Soapy aroma. Fairly sweet with medium body and clean rounded mouthfeel. Lightly nutty/caramelly with perfume and syrup on a distance. Slight resiny bitterness with notes of alcohol.

Bottle. Sparkly. Dark copper colour with a creamy head. Peppery, malty flavour. Creamy mouthfeel. Buttery, malty aftertaste. Very nice for a bottled ale. 1998 vintage: Bottle. Sourly malty aroma, green apple. Clear chestnut colour. Very small head. Malty flavour, a lot better than the aroma. Peppery aftertaste.
