Full-bodied with complex fruit flavours, Bishops Finger is a strong premium cask-conditioned ale brewed to a traditional Kentish recipe. What’s behind the name? Well, a Bishops Finger is an unusual finger-shaped signpost still found in Kent, which once pointed pilgrims on their way to Canterbury. Only the finest malted barley, Kent hops and fresh water from our own artesian well are used in the production of one of Britain’s best-loved ales, which is also exported in bottles to more than 30 countries worldwide.

Nearly no aroma to speak of, except slightly sourish Kentish Goldings - very familiar to me after brewing my last brown ale. HUGE head on this sucker, possibly due to it having been transported by plane from Ontario. Taste reminds me of the Fullers 2006 vintage. Strange chemical taste in the initial sip, followed by amber malting and leading out on a wonderful warm aftertaste. Great carbonation, thin body. I can’t quite wrap my taste buds around those Goldings, and the pleasant aftertaste lasts about three seconds and subsides into a growing layer of bitter hops. Not unpleasant, but nothing to write home about.

From a bottle 11/12/06. A lovely almost ruby brown in the glass, full head that gently dissipates. Dry, bitter and very hoppy. A long lingering finish. A favourite of mine. I’ve re-rated this. Its good, but not that great.

500 mL bottle. Lovely, deep chestnut brown. Head doesn’t last, but lacing does. Aroma of floral hops and citrus, followed by brown sugar. Sweet malt up front, but excellent hops in middle and end. Got some dark friut once it warmed a bit. A little thin and tinny. Long finish. I like the style and I like the beer.

From a 500ml bottle. Clear dark red colour with a nice off white head. A very malty aroma. Malty, hoppy flavour with some bitterness.

Nice enough malty nose and pours red amber with a pale tan foamy head. Flavour is a little overdry and astringent in the finish with some sharp acid at the back of the throat. The metallic quality others have mentioned also detracts.

Bottle. Amber with huge, dense off white head. Caramel, dark fruit and malt in aroma. Toasted malt in flavour along with caramel. Sweet with a nice lasting, bitter finish. Quite surprised this ended up scoring so high with me.

500 mL bottle: This is good but why drink this when you can down a Fuller’s London Pride Ale or Hopgoblin? An average ESB at best. Medium dark brown, thin head, lots of lacing. Hops are too sharp & body not sweet enough to help out, just leaving a sharp & bitter mouthfeel and finish. Got more pleasant as it warmed but like I said, grab a Fullers in the can! This is just too harsh, almost metallic. The 5.4% might make it a little too malty too. Inferior example of style.

Pours a light brown with a medium off-white head. Malty, hoppy and bitter taste that I felt was a bit watery. Thin bodied with bitter finish. Pretty good, far from my favourite ESB.
