Commercial Description:
Available filtered and pasteurised in bottles and cans.
NOTE: Only ratings for the bottled vesrion should be entered here. The cask version has a separate listing.

Full-bodied with complex fruit flavours, Bishops Finger is a strong premium cask-conditioned ale brewed to a traditional Kentish recipe. What’s behind the name? Well, a Bishops Finger is an unusual finger-shaped signpost still found in Kent, which once pointed pilgrims on their way to Canterbury. Only the finest malted barley, Kent hops and fresh water from our own artesian well are used in the production of one of Britain’s best-loved ales, which is also exported in bottles to more than 30 countries worldwide.

Bottle, 1999-04-20 one of the first non international beers that I tasted, become boring (for me) a couple of years ago especially when it’s gone "folköl" i.e. 3,5%!

A clear amber colored beer, with a thick beige head. The aroma of hopbitters with mals and fruits. The tastet of bitterhops, malty caramel. There are fruits and sweetness. The aftertaste is dry with bitter and a little sweet.

Brown-red body with an off white medium sized thick head. Dry woody earthy orangey nose. The taste begins with an upfront bitterness and ends with notes of orange and chocolate, with some hop again. A woody dry maltiness shows up there too, but all in all, not the greatest bitter around. Heavy seems to think that this was the 3.5% version, I’m not convinced so my rating goes here, for now.

50cl bottle poured into a pint glass. Amber brown with half finger off-white head. Aroma is malty with a touch of caramel and toffee. Flavor is very smokey. Strong hops also and maybe some dark fruit. Short finish is bitter. Nice beer that would pair well with a grilled steak.

Faintly metallic, sharp fruity bitter. This lacks the richness, or body, of the cask version and, obviously, has more carbonation. As it lost some of the chill though, the flavour developed and improved.

Bottle. Medium brown to darkish amber. Low head. Malty aroma, a touch sour, smoky, sweet too, with caramel and a touch of dark fruits. Flavor: medium rich malt, caramel, tabacco, pears, citrus fruits. A touch sweet, with sour notes and good hops. Finish dry smokey, tabacco, light malty, woody. Slightly whiskey-like. Hops not terribly strong, but linger a long time. Relatively light body, low carbonation. Interesting and very nice. Light and not really full flavor, subtle.

50cl clear glass bottle. Deep copper colour, big white had that collapses quickly but sticks to the glass. Aroma of red fruit, malt and hops. Taste: Intense malty bitterness (much more so than the same company’s Spitfire) gives way to fruity and caramel finish. Lasting, toffee-ish but only mildly bitter aftertaste. A good, well-balanced stronger premium bitter, but no match for Fuller’s ESB.
