Commercial Description:
Bottle; Pasteurised.
Goldings Summer Hop Ale is a light-flavoured bitter made with Kentish malt and fresh Goldings hops. Harvested from hop gardens within five miles of the Shepherd Neame brewery in Faversham, the beer is almost floral-scented, with a unique biscuity taste.

Tasted in Toronto. Obtained from LCBO as part of summer series. Tasted in dimple mug. Appearance is dark copper reddish thin white sustained head with notable carbonation. Aroma has notes of caramel, candy floss, flowery hoppy grassyness. Carbonation is present in the tasting, flavour of some soft caramel, biscuit, and hoppy bitterness in the finish.

Copper colour, light brown abundant head, significant lace left in glass. Malty aroma and faint hops. Smooth mouthfeel, understated carbonation, very quaffable. Dry hop leaf finish, dry nice bitter aftertaste. Very nice for any hop fan.

Colour is a pleasant light-amber/orange. Good floral/hop aroma, caramel and rain water. The flavour is initially wishy-washy -- a little disappointing. The bitter hops finally show through in the middle, offering nuances of grapefruit. Finish is quite woody. Overall a fairly dry brew, on the palate and in spirit.

Bottled. Orange/amber with a big, fluffy head and good webbing. Not the most distinguished flavour, and too low on those Goldings hops, but pleasant enough dry biscuit and fresh citrus flavours. A bit weak and slightly minerally.

Bottle from LCBO. Why, oh why, do breweries continue to use clear bottles for light(ish) beers like this one? It looks lovely - clear golden-amber with a moderate white head. But the aroma which seems like it could be nice and fresh, with notes of honey and hops, is ruined by an underlying skunkiness. Same goes for the flavour - it’s a bit floral and sweet, could be a nice summer refresher, but there’s that stale skunkiness coming up behind. I suppose I could try and find an unskunked bottle, but I figure that any brewery stupid enough to use clear bottles for a beer like this deserves the criticism, so I’m not going to go out of my way for a re-rate.

Bottle (500ml - clear). Shared with blankboy. Poured amber with a decent white lasting head. Aroma seemed funky at first, then grainy-hoppy (goldings, of course, quite herbal), then as it warmed, fruit; to be honest, seemed a bit skunky/metallic. Taste was quite pleasant - mild grainy somewhat yeasty malt, floral/herbal hops, no skunk or metal - lightly fruity-sweet, nice herbal bitter finish. Soft, somewhat watery mouthfeel, a little flat, ever so slightly dry and astringent - I suspect this would be eminently quaffable in quantity on tap.
