Commercial Description:
Shiner 100 Commemorator is a rich and robust brew that is a fitting tribute to our legacy of 100 years of handcrafting stylish and flavorful beers. Commemorator is a bold style that would have been very familiar to Kosmos. One of the highlights of the Bavarian brewing year is the rollout of strong beer or starkbier, developed by monks as “liquid bread” to sustain them through the Lenten season. Commemorator is brewed in that Old-World tradition and embodies the German-Czech heritage Shiner has proudly stood for since 1909. This 17 % original extract dark lager is a blend of two row Munich and Caramel 60 malt mildly spiced with Bavarian Hallertau Tradition and Spalter Select hops to allow the toasted caramel flavor to predominate. Alcohol by Vol.: 6.7 % Original Gravity: 17.0 % Bitterness: 17 IBU Color: 30 SRM Real Degree of Fermentation: 60.7 %

The aroma is sweet and malty with caramel, toffee, dark fruit, hops, and grain husks. The appearance is deep amber with a large head. The flavor is like the aroma but better. The palate is smooth. Overall a really nice beer.

12 ounce bottle - $1.49 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia. Appearance: Pours a clear, deep, garnet-hued body with a lavish, large, off-white head. Smell: Highly toasted bread crusts with some sugary, sweetish qualities about it. Faint earthy, leafy hop notes. Some pitted dates as well. Taste: Darkly toasted, bready Munich maltiness gently coated with a full helping of sweet, dark Dutch stroop. Fruitiness coming across as a taste of candied dates. A mildly earthy, leafy hop character and bitterness. Teeny bit of honey butter and maybe a pinch of cocoa mix. Very minor hint of alcohol on the tail end. Finishes smooth but rather sweet. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Slightly sticky mouthfeel. Drinkability: True, it’s a bit sweet, a bit simplistic, but it’s by no means a bad beer and certainly one of the better brews to roll out of the Spoetzl Brewery.

Pours dark amber with a foamy tan head. Aroma of caramelized wort, toffee and candied fruits. Tastes of caramel, bread dough, plums and raisins. Full bodied and a bit sticky with soft carbonation.

Sampled a six-pack in South Texas while on a fishing trip to Baffin Bay with my pops. Perhaps the best offering from the Spoetzl brewery. Pours clear deep brown with minimal beige fizz. Aroma is weak toffee and spice with toasted malt. Flavor follows same suit with a typical doppelbock profile of brown sugar, caramel malts and lightly spiced hops in the finish. Medium-bodied, easy to drink. Not too damn bad at all.

pours to a dark copper body, very clear with aroma of caramel . the body is light but is more in the doppelbock style and a bit carbonated for a high alc beer, not bad but it’s not as balanced as the bell’s doppel or sam, overall, it’s a slightly better than average.

The pour was clear copper, thin looking for a doppelbock. An off-white head appeared and offered thin wisps of lacing. The aroma was toasted, caramel malts and some slight sourness at the end. The flavor was of a light doppelbock up front with lots of caramel malt sweetness that quickly gave way to a sour metallic flavor on the backside. The mouthfeel was thin.

Although I’ve had better dopplebocks, this is not that bad. Aroma has some nice notes of roasted malt, caramel and a touch of hops. Flavor is a good balance of sweet toffee, biscuit and hops.

Bottle from Sun Devil. Pours a deep shade of amber with a thick tan head. Plenty of yeast and toast in the aroma. Tastes of brown sugar, nutmeg, dark cocoa, and hops. Nears a belgian double in flavor. Nice and hearty.
