Commercial Description:
Shiner 100 Commemorator is a rich and robust brew that is a fitting tribute to our legacy of 100 years of handcrafting stylish and flavorful beers. Commemorator is a bold style that would have been very familiar to Kosmos. One of the highlights of the Bavarian brewing year is the rollout of strong beer or starkbier, developed by monks as “liquid bread” to sustain them through the Lenten season. Commemorator is brewed in that Old-World tradition and embodies the German-Czech heritage Shiner has proudly stood for since 1909. This 17 % original extract dark lager is a blend of two row Munich and Caramel 60 malt mildly spiced with Bavarian Hallertau Tradition and Spalter Select hops to allow the toasted caramel flavor to predominate. Alcohol by Vol.: 6.7 % Original Gravity: 17.0 % Bitterness: 17 IBU Color: 30 SRM Real Degree of Fermentation: 60.7 %

Bottle, courtesy kiefdog. Clear red pour, frothy, white head and sticky lacing. Some dark fruits in the nose, spicy, biscuit, some malts, some slight roast. Flavor is some sticky metallic mess, some fruit. Very mellow smooth body, too light, not drinkable.

12 oz. bottle from Plaza Liquors - Pours a clear mahogany color with a one finger thick light tan head. Very light lacing. Aroma is caramel malt, herbal hops, and light esters. Flavor is toasted caramel malt. Medium body. Easy drinking. Not too shabby.

I liked this better before I found out it was a dopplebock, but still...Beer pours amber color with a smallish off white colored head that is minimilly retained. Aroma is caramel malty with some dust. Flavor is sweet with some caramel flavor and thats about it. Obviously doesn’t rank with any of the might dopplebocks, but is better than some of the other American dopples I have had.

Pour from a 12 oz bottle. Deep reddish amber color, thin off white head that immediately fizzles, leaving virtually no lacing as the glass is drained. Aroma of malt. Flavor of sugary sweet malt syrup. Virtually no hoppiness in the finish, just the cloying, lingering, sugary sweet malt extract flavor. I don’t mind a sweet beer but this is more like drinking diluted malt syrup.

12oz bottle from the Wine Rack. Pours clear brown with light tan head. Aroma is malts and spices. Flavor is watery with malt and spices. Rather bland for a 100th anniversary ale.

This poured a lighter brown, red color with a small off white head. Aroma was malty mainly and a bit roasted, Flavor was sweet and malty, a bit roasted tiny hints of fruit and caramel, and some metalic notes as well. Not very good.

Sugary malt flavor bursts in the beginning, but fall short of a solid ale. Rotten aftertaste doesn’t help either.

Single bottle purchased at Simone’s in Lakewood. Ah Shiner, my dad would be so proud I’m drinking one of them there Texas beers. This is a rather attractive beer, it has a nice amber-red/brown body, but the head goes away too quickly. Flavor is sugary and malty. Tastes kinda sloppily put together, but still tolerable. The kind of beer that would go so well with meatloaf.
