Commercial Description:
Shiner 100 Commemorator is a rich and robust brew that is a fitting tribute to our legacy of 100 years of handcrafting stylish and flavorful beers. Commemorator is a bold style that would have been very familiar to Kosmos. One of the highlights of the Bavarian brewing year is the rollout of strong beer or starkbier, developed by monks as “liquid bread” to sustain them through the Lenten season. Commemorator is brewed in that Old-World tradition and embodies the German-Czech heritage Shiner has proudly stood for since 1909. This 17 % original extract dark lager is a blend of two row Munich and Caramel 60 malt mildly spiced with Bavarian Hallertau Tradition and Spalter Select hops to allow the toasted caramel flavor to predominate. Alcohol by Vol.: 6.7 % Original Gravity: 17.0 % Bitterness: 17 IBU Color: 30 SRM Real Degree of Fermentation: 60.7 %

Pours a bright coppery color with no head. Aroma is malt, ripe fruit, and a breadiness. Flavor is toasty malt with an odd puckering finish. Somewhat disappointing.

Bottle. Kind of funny that this is my first Shiner offering to review on here, but I guess it’s been a while since I’ve been in Texas. Pours clear copper with a fizzy beige head that looked like it was going to immediately disappear and then looked like it was going to stick around for a little while and then just ninja vanished when I turned my head for a second. Smells like caramel malts with a little bit of smoke. Tastes mostly the same. Slight hop kick toward the finish, which is mostly bready malt. Medium-bodied and smooth. Cheers to Shiner for 100 years of providing Texans with something (often the only thing) other than Bud/Coors/Miller Lite.

Bottle. Pours a dark amber with a nice two finger white head. Some lacing is left behind by this brew. Aroma is fruit, caramel, and some malts. Flavor is spices, yeast, and has a friuty dough aftertaste. Medium bodied with lots of carbonation. This one is a lot better then their other beers.

Bottle from Party Town, KY. Poured brown color with an average frothy off-white head that lasted with good lacing. Moderate toasted malt and small hop aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Moderate toasted malt flavor with a moderate bittersweet finish of average duration. Good drinkable beers.

Poured into a snifter, it is a rich caramel color approaching a ruby tone.; with a minimal tan head, little lacing. I smell caramel definitely, a little alcohol and warming spices. I think it’s delicious. One of the most balanced and bold brews I’ve had from Shiner. I would have though it was an American strong ale, but a rich, sweeter dopplebock I can see also.
