Commercial Description:
Shiner 100 Commemorator is a rich and robust brew that is a fitting tribute to our legacy of 100 years of handcrafting stylish and flavorful beers. Commemorator is a bold style that would have been very familiar to Kosmos. One of the highlights of the Bavarian brewing year is the rollout of strong beer or starkbier, developed by monks as “liquid bread” to sustain them through the Lenten season. Commemorator is brewed in that Old-World tradition and embodies the German-Czech heritage Shiner has proudly stood for since 1909. This 17 % original extract dark lager is a blend of two row Munich and Caramel 60 malt mildly spiced with Bavarian Hallertau Tradition and Spalter Select hops to allow the toasted caramel flavor to predominate. Alcohol by Vol.: 6.7 % Original Gravity: 17.0 % Bitterness: 17 IBU Color: 30 SRM Real Degree of Fermentation: 60.7 %

Bottle: Pours a beautiful reddish brown, froth is light. Flavor: a proper mix of hopps and malt. Taste is very lively and the finish is long lasting with fruity flavors.

The picture shows a large, tan head. However, the one I tried didn’t pour much of a head. The aroma is that of hopps and a hint of carmel. Very smooth tasting with no aftertaste.

Not a bad beer for shiner.... I’m rather impressed but my expectations were low going in. Pours dark brown with medium head. Aroma of caramel and malts. Taste much the same with a nice hop presence.

Pours a dark and clear mauve to chestnut brown color with a small, spongy, beige colored head. The foam is quickly fleeting, and hardly a spot of lace remains on the glass. Aromas include moderately toasted caramel malt, raisins, indiscernible dark fruits, and a surprising dose of earthy hops. While it’s nothing exciting, the nose is at least well balanced. Flavors, too, are nicely put together. The toasty sweetness of the caramel works well with mild cocoa and dark fruit, with hints of wintery spice and earthen hops providing ample, balancing bitterness. Traces of hazelnut lend a welcomed, nutty flavor that goes nicely with vanilla. Medium bodied and perhaps just a shape overly carbonated, the mouthfeel finishes lightly syrupy and warm, but not so much as to offend. Pretty decent and drinkable brew.

poured a dark amber with a off-white/beige head. aroma of caramel and alcohol spice, also seems to have some faint fruity notes. flavor of caramel, spice, and alcohol. medium mouthfeel and high carbonation. glad to see that shiner did something good for their 100th year beer.

This is very impressive to come from Shiner. I used to love this brewery and I still make it a point to taste every beer of theirs that I can, but recently I feel they have really declined. Perhaps this beer is a step towards a rebirth. Nice malty flavors with a serious dose of caramel. good stuff for a six pack that cost less then $7

nice sweet malty aroma. Head is thin with litle lacing. Flavor seems dominated by the caramel and malty sweetness. carbonation seemed light to me.
