Commercial Description:
Shiner 100 Commemorator is a rich and robust brew that is a fitting tribute to our legacy of 100 years of handcrafting stylish and flavorful beers. Commemorator is a bold style that would have been very familiar to Kosmos. One of the highlights of the Bavarian brewing year is the rollout of strong beer or starkbier, developed by monks as “liquid bread” to sustain them through the Lenten season. Commemorator is brewed in that Old-World tradition and embodies the German-Czech heritage Shiner has proudly stood for since 1909. This 17 % original extract dark lager is a blend of two row Munich and Caramel 60 malt mildly spiced with Bavarian Hallertau Tradition and Spalter Select hops to allow the toasted caramel flavor to predominate. Alcohol by Vol.: 6.7 % Original Gravity: 17.0 % Bitterness: 17 IBU Color: 30 SRM Real Degree of Fermentation: 60.7 %

12oz bottle. Poured a clear, dark amber with a short off white head. Aroma of toasty malts with light caramel and dark fruit. The flavor has some nutty caramel sweetness with subtle hints of dark fruit, cinnamon, and a slightly spicy finish. Very smooth and malty with a decent body.

This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a large sized head of foamy finely sized tan colored bubbles that were mostly diminishing and left behind a transparent typically carbonated copper brown colored body and a thick foamy lacing. The aroma was mild malty and doughy. The mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start and at the finish. The flavor contained notes of deep caramel and floral hops. A decent one that I would consider buying again.

Rusty colored pour with a small, short-lived, white head. Toasty caramel aroma with hints of almond, vanilla, and ripe fruit. The flavor has some nutty caramel sweetness with subtle hints of dark fruit, cinnamon, and a slightly spicy finish. Slightly thin body with lots of carbonation.

Bottled. Poured clear reddish-amber with a short cap of beige head. The aroma picked up dry-roasted caramel, red rice, and a bit of redder fruit accented by a touch of earth.. very sweet overall. The flavor had similar caramel to the nose and toasty molasses at the core (but weak and not very flavorful malts here).. some dry, chalk and berry bitterness around.. short finish with tacky caramel and molasses. Lighter-medium bodied and tacky on the palate with not very good flow to it.. I didn’t find any serious flaws in this, but it surely wasn’t enjoyable.

Bottle Interesting pour, rusty red with a nice big airy head. Drinks with a distinct sugary essence, with the 6.7% evident in every sip. But it’s pretty drinkable, particularly with a salty snack. (#3655, 8/30/2009)

12oz bottle acquired in trade. Poured a medium copper color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of caramel, some roastiness, nutty, and a little earthy. Tastes of caramel, lighter toasted nuttiness, and lightly fruiity. Thinner but creamy body.

Clear copper appearance with a medium size, fast fading, off white head that left little lacing. Sweet caramel malt aroma overwhelmes just about everything except for a bit of seasonal spices. Earthy flavors of dark fruit, toffee and molassas. Might not be a shining example of a doppelbock, but a good showing for Shiner.
