Commercial Description:
Shiner 100 Commemorator is a rich and robust brew that is a fitting tribute to our legacy of 100 years of handcrafting stylish and flavorful beers. Commemorator is a bold style that would have been very familiar to Kosmos. One of the highlights of the Bavarian brewing year is the rollout of strong beer or starkbier, developed by monks as “liquid bread” to sustain them through the Lenten season. Commemorator is brewed in that Old-World tradition and embodies the German-Czech heritage Shiner has proudly stood for since 1909. This 17 % original extract dark lager is a blend of two row Munich and Caramel 60 malt mildly spiced with Bavarian Hallertau Tradition and Spalter Select hops to allow the toasted caramel flavor to predominate. Alcohol by Vol.: 6.7 % Original Gravity: 17.0 % Bitterness: 17 IBU Color: 30 SRM Real Degree of Fermentation: 60.7 %

Nice reddish brown color but this is where the quality ends. This may be the worst beer I’ve ever had. Tastes like the bottom of someone’s boot. Even worse aftertaste. Bitter as well. Now the only question is, what to do with the two I didn’t choke down, try to give away, or pour down the drain (1, 1, 2)?

A caramel color beer with a nice head. Aroma was nutty. The taste was real malty, with a nice nuttiness. It had a decent creamy mouthfeel & was a very smooth beer.

[Bottle] Pours an even brown color with a lot of off-white head. Sweet malty aroma of bread and light grains. Roasted malt taste includes some burnt caramel and light hop flavoring. Slightly astringent finish. An easy to drink beer, but still with a pretty decent mouthfeel. This is one of the better offerings from Shiner.

12oz bottle into a pint glass. I was expecting more out of this puppy, but it wasn’t bad. It’s like Shiner always does - make a relatively common style and lighten it up for the normal guy.

Deep copper color with off-white head and good lacing. Malty flavor is lightly hopped and finished with a burnt caramel taste. A good doppelbock.

12oz bottle in a pilsener glass, this was on sale for $5 per sixer. Dark ruby red color, its got a pretty good malty aroma to it. The flavor is robust malts, fruity, nutty, a good dopplebock and for the price this really can’t be beat. I am going to have to give all of the other Shiner beers a go just to see what’s up. 2009 Vintage

7/27/2009: Shiner 100 Commemorator pours a brilliant deep copper color and has a samll beige crown that disappears somewhat quickly. The beer clean and clear with an average amount of carbonation. The aroma is a bit sweet and reminds me of French toast and with maple syrup and nuts (pecans?) and conjures up dried leaves. The flavor is quite average and lacking depth. It has some prune thin caramel, but there is a strong yeasty ribbon of flavor throughout that doesn’t seem to fit. The creamy, yeastiness builds more and more to the point that it just isn’t good. There really is no finish as the beer just seems to drop of and hit like a rock. It is moderately sweet with a medium-full body that has a creamy texture that is just a bit sticky. Overall this beer is okay and one bottle is more than enough.

12 fl. oz. bottle (twist-off cap, 6.7% Alc by Vol.) from Jungle Jim’s International Market in Fairfield, Ohio. Rating #166 for this beer.
