Commercial Description:
Shiner 100 Commemorator is a rich and robust brew that is a fitting tribute to our legacy of 100 years of handcrafting stylish and flavorful beers. Commemorator is a bold style that would have been very familiar to Kosmos. One of the highlights of the Bavarian brewing year is the rollout of strong beer or starkbier, developed by monks as “liquid bread” to sustain them through the Lenten season. Commemorator is brewed in that Old-World tradition and embodies the German-Czech heritage Shiner has proudly stood for since 1909. This 17 % original extract dark lager is a blend of two row Munich and Caramel 60 malt mildly spiced with Bavarian Hallertau Tradition and Spalter Select hops to allow the toasted caramel flavor to predominate. Alcohol by Vol.: 6.7 % Original Gravity: 17.0 % Bitterness: 17 IBU Color: 30 SRM Real Degree of Fermentation: 60.7 %

A pretty malty sweet aroma. Color is a nice brown but the head disappears very rapidly. The flavor is nice. A good sweetness and some caramel. Pretty drinkable.

Pours a dark coppery brown with thin off-white head. Aroma is sweet and malty, with notes of honey and caramel. Flavor is similar malty sweetness with some brown sugar. Slightly thin mouthfeel and malty finish. Decent, but nothing to write home about.

Bottle. Pours clear mahogany with a small, fizzy, off-white head, diminishing with spare lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (caramel, nutty, cookie), light hop (grass), average yeast (broth) with notes of alcohol and brown sugar. Light bodied, thin texture, average carbonation, and a metallic finish. Average duration, moderate sweetness, light acidity and bitterness.

I don’t know that I would call it a doppel, but it is not a bad beer overall. Pours red-brown with an off-white head. Nose is reminiscent of Samiclaus- sweet malt, burnt sugar, brown sugar, molasses, cherries/ fruit, and an all-around sweetness. Flavor is about the same with light malt, cloying sweetness, and a corn syrupiness that keeps asserting itself. I keep getting a honey and sugar with some cherry-like fruit in the flavor. Finish lingers with the same fruitiness. Medium-bodied and fizzy, but all-in-all a unique lager.

Pours dark amber, clear, and with a big foamy, cream colored head. What aroma there I can detect is a nutty maltiness that I get from most Shiner brews. Lots of malt sweetness up front, thin in the middle, and a mildly hoppy finish. Low to medium body. An alright brew that could use a bit more complexity and a bit less sweetness.

Bottle and served in standard pint glass: Mahogany with a fading frothy head and minimal lace. The aroma has notes of caramel and bready malts, grassy and herbal hops, hint of pear and plum esters, and a touch of hard water. The taste is mostly sweet malts with a dash of fruit upfront. Very minor bitterness and a dash of nutmeg upon the finish, a tad metallic as well. The mouth feel is sprite and lively, a bit thin and chalky. Overall, a very quaffable brew and better than expected.
