It pours dark with an unaggressive head. The flavor is of toasted malt and it is medium bodied. aenimopiate (148), The United States of Texas, Texas, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jan 18, 2009 Very dark beer(as the name would hint). The taste was almost of burnt malt with very little hoppy flavor to it. Not my favorite from Shiner, but not a bad brew, either. Skyview (4095), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jan 17, 2009 Sampled from 12-oz bottle at Cellar’s Wine & Spirits in Shorewood, MN. Pours a semi-clear dark brown brew with an average beige head that slowly dissipates to a thin off-white ring and some spotty lacing. Aroma of toasted dark malt, a hint of chocolate, some figs a hint of flowery hops and some molasses. Taste is medium bodied, some carbonation with flavors of toasted dark malt, chocolate, flowery hops and some earthy herbs. Finish is semi-sweet with a short lived toasted dark aftertaste that quickly disappears. Collint (465), Sylva, North Carolina, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jan 7, 2009 Bottle, pours an almost black beer with a light tan almost no head. Aroma is sweet malty roast and choco. Flavor is sweet, clean and roasty. Very thin body. Kinda weak on the flavor, i guess i was expecting a heavy beer like a Impy stout, ha. Decent not bad or good ChainGangGuy (2616), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Jan 5, 2009 Appearance: Dark brown, black body, and quite clear, with a very thin, very wispy, off-white head.
Smell: Very wimpy, moderately disappointing nose overall. Faint notes of chocolate, roasted grain, and Texas-born sorrow.
Taste: Thin, watered down flavors of toast, roast, and chocolate with a light caramel sweetness. Small hint of grain. Still watery. Lightly spicy Noble hops with a very low amount of bitterness. Short finish with meek tastes of chocolate and roast. Eh.
Mouthfeel: Light-bodied. Medium carbonation. Somewhat watery.
Drinkability: While the thin, watery nature of this beer lends itself to overall drinkability, the lack of flavor and complexities prevents me from wanting to ever again wanting to drink it in the first place. Beerlando (2353), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Jan 4, 2009 Courtesy GodOfThunder. A clear, dark crimson colored body is topped with a thin beige head. A sudsy wash rejoins the body quickly, leaving no lace. Aromas include dark caramel, hints of raisin and fig, cocoa, and faint mocha notes. Flavors are mostly sweet, the caramel and raisin elements showing considerably stronger than the roasty coffee and faint, earthy hop notes. For as light as the body is, it is still on the syrupy, sticky side. Overall, it is a fairly drinkable brew, but the cloying sweetness could use a bit more roast for balance. xibalba89 (147), New York, New York, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 4, 2009 Had it in a bottle at the County Line, Austin. Pours black with a thin head. Aroma has the typical swartzbier profile of black malt and very little strength. The flavor was the best balance of bitterness and sweetness I’ve ever had for the style, which isn’t my favorite. Also the best thing I’ve ever had from Shiner. A jewel in the limited world of Texas beers. DrDavid (957), Johnson, Vermont, USA
