Commercial Description:
A Bohemian Black Lager is a rare and delicious style of beer, referred to in Germany as "Schwarzbier". Shiner Bohemian Black Lager remains true to this old-world style by using imported Czech Saaz and Styrains Hops and select roasted malts to make it our darkest beer. First brewed to commemorate our 97th anniversary, this Bohemian Black Lager remains true to the old-world heritage of the German and Czech immigrants that settled Shiner. Prosit!

Didn’t enjoy as much as 96. But I’m really glad they brought this one back as SHINER BLACK. On tap, i’ts phenomenal.

Pours deep brown, almost black, with ruby edges when held up to the light. Head is small and dense and dissipates to a few bubbles with almost no lacing. Main aroma is of sweet malts with a little bit of coffee thrown in. Not a lot standing out in the smell. Light malt taste up front with a bit of dark fruits and coffee in the middle. Hops are present in a crisp finish. Mouthfeel is light and crisp with a bit of a carbonation twinge on the tongue. This may not be the best or most complex dark lager I’ve had, but it is very drinkable. I’d actually buy this again.

Pours a cherry coke black. i finger head and descent lace. Not much of a nose. Less sweet then SA Black Lager. Malt is very pronounced. Very nutty flavor with a lager mouthfeel. A very good beer.

Even through this cold I can detect the roasted coffee aroma that permiates from this brew. The color is a pretty opage black, with a tight and small head. Flavor is nice enough, with light coffee flavors, acompanied by hearty bread flavors, with just the lightest of yeast frutiness. The beer is easy drinking but a little soda-like with carbonation.

12oz bottle pours medium dark brown with a light tan head, settling out quickly. Smells downright terrible, with a wet cardboard, stale leather and mothball smell. Tastes is horribly overdone with this mothball/old coffee/leather deal, and the body is incredibly weak and watery. Tastes like chewing on styrofoam and old, damp, used coffee filters. Awful.

Quite dark with a one finger tan head that does not last. Aroma of roasted chocolate, coffee, and anise. Flavor is toffee and dark chocolate. Small amount of hop. Slightly fizzy. A nice subtle roasted malt beer. Very enjoyable and a pleasant surprise.

(12oz bottle) Small beige head atop cola black body. Aroma is medium sweet, caramel, roast, some burnt, coffee, faint banana. Taste is medium sweet, coffee, roast, some caramel, sugar, chocolate. Light body, light acidity.

The little Spoetzl brewery in Shiner has been doing some pretty interesting things lately. Turning one of their anniversary beers into a full time product is one. This black lager pours deep brown, nearly black. Forms a nice head which dissipates after a brief visit, but the lacing remnants are nice. The nose on this beer is very potent. Shiner definately has a distinct ever-so-slight sulphury nose, but this also adds roasted corn, burnt coffee, and... is it toffee? Mouth feel is light, watery. Was expecting something thicker. But the taste makes up for the mouth feel. This is song on the tongue of molasses, dried dates and roasted coffee. It is not a punch in the teeth. From the color and pour one would expect this to be an overpowering brew, but it is softer, and eminently drinkable... think I’ll have another.
