| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Feb 2, 2008 Bottle. Aroma of toasted caramel with some light hop. Near opaque brown/black color with a head that entirely disappeared in seconds. Medium body with fizzy carbonation. Flavor of roasted/toasted malt with balancing noble hop. Swarzbier it is. Not complicated, but tasty. hopdog (5617), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 2, 2008 (Draft at Boondoggle’s, Seabrook, TX): Pours a black, dark brown color, big creamy, cream colored head, somewhat diminishing. Malty nutty taste, not very strong. Watery dusty taste, some malts. More bocky taste than stout. Nutty. Somewhat fruity taste, like cherries. Tasty. jezmez68 (334), Chesterton, Indiana, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 1, 2008 Shiner makes some pretty beers. The bock is especially brilliant. Anyway, this black lager has a nice look, black like a porter but not as opaque. Not much of a head. Nice smell of hops and malts, almost caramel-like. I really liked the flavor. Malty with a bit of bite from the saaz hops. Finishes smooth like all good black lagers do. On tap at the Flying Saucer in Houston. Bockyhorsey (2554), Mesa, Arizona, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Jan 30, 2008 12oz bottle. Aroma had a good roasted coffee on the nose. Black body with decent head that went flat quickly. Flavor was overcarboninated thin sweet moderate bitter beer. Watered down. Easy on the palate because it’s like drinking black water. daniellerose7 (119), new york, New York, USA
| 2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 6/20 | Jan 28, 2008 Wha happen...?? I must have gotten a bad line... no brewer would intentionally make a beer this bad/sour/flat. The only thing is... I’ve had a bad Shiner line MORE times than a good one. Wussup wi dat? On tap at Flying Saucer AND Ginger Man. gotohelunc (476), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jan 27, 2008 34 oz. draft. I asked the waitress what was on tap and she rattled off all the normal macros and Texas beers, then mentioned this one but shook her head and said it was bad. Whenever that happens at a non-beer bar, that’ll be the first beer I order, since the bad review probably means it doesn’t taste like all the others.
Anyway, near black color, no head...at least not by the time it reached the table. A bit of a roasty flavor, maybe coffee or molasses. Some of those same things are in the taste with a bit of sourness in the finish. Kinda sticky on the finish, though not too much so. Pretty crisp beer overall. Not the greatest thing ever, but I’d order it again if the selection was limited. BMan1113VR (2946), Los Angeles (and Dallas), Texas, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jan 26, 2008 Aroma is roasted grain malts. Appearance is a dark brown beer with a creamy off-white head with decent lacing. Flavor is burnt malts, grassy hops, and some chewing tabacco. Its overcarbonated and has a very dry mouthfeel. I was looking forward to this as being the best of the Shiner’s, but was disapointed. If memory serves, I liked most of the other products of theirs much better than this.
