Goes down very smooth for a dark beer. A: Dark brown, almost black. Firm head. S: Smells of cereal and other grain. T: A hint of malt, cereal, and grian that is not to overpowered and not to subtle; Very small bitter taste for a black lager. Acts like a pale lager with characteristics of a dark lager. D: Excellent drinkability. Very smooth. Low bitterness for a dark beer. btbullard (8), Fort Worth, Texas, USA does not count | 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 20/20 | May 16, 2008 Didn’t enjoy as much as 96. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 1, 2008 Shiner makes some pretty beers. The bock is especially brilliant. Anyway, this black lager has a nice look, black like a porter but not as opaque. Not much of a head. Nice smell of hops and malts, almost caramel-like. I really liked the flavor. Malty with a bit of bite from the saaz hops. Finishes smooth like all good black lagers do. On tap at the Flying Saucer in Houston. RedEft (131), Wichita, Kansas, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Dec 30, 2006 In a chilled mug: poured deep black with a smallish, tan head. Aroma dominated by malts and a slight sweet-sour undertone. Roast malts dominate, with a slightly dark chocolate bitter and a subtle sweet undertone lurking under the surface. It manages to stay very crisp and refreshing. I’m a bit puzzled by the pedestrian ratings I see here, because this beer was more than pleasant. Quite surprising. Kudos to Shiner. I guess there are some good things about Texas afterall. framebender (56), Boulder, Colorado, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Sep 28, 2006 Dark black color with amber highlights. Thin moutfeel and appearance. Thin head. Not great for style - flavor is thin, mouthfeel watery and not so dark. However, I I just think of BEER when I drink and not Schwarzbier or Black Lager, it is really enjoyable. Malty flavor with just a kiss of hops and extremely clean finish. Really enjoy this beer for a beer but isn’t that great of style. Finishes so clean you can drink it in Texas weather and not get bogged down. Would certainly buy again. pojo41 (315), Hattiesburg, Mississippi, USA
