Commercial Description:
Shiner Dunkelweizen is a crisp, hearty brew modeled after a Bavarian-style dunkelweizen, German for dark wheat. Shiner Dunkelweizen is fermented with an old-world technique called Kräusening, brewed to be smooth and rich without being heavy on the palate. Its subtle flavors come from the brew’s malted wheat and malted barley. This beer uses the old Czech mashing technique of taking small portions of the mash and boiling, then mixing it back in the main mash. This technique, called ‘decotion’, takes a great deal more time... but develops the rich dark color and creates the body which is enjoyed in the finished beer.

This was a totally decent dunkelweizen that I would like Shiner to bring back, as it was one of my favorites.

This was a really nice Dunkel. Lighter than I would like, but the flavor was all there. Why was this retired in favor of Holiday Cheer? Bad move, guys.

Pours a darkish red amber with a tan head. Not much aroma. Flavor is smokey with a bit of coffee and malt. Hoppy aftertaste. Not bad. Retired, but I’d be willing to bet it will be back.

Late June/Early July 2008: Shiner Dunkel Weizen has a filtered dark amber appearance. There is a fleeting khaki head and a moderate to generous level of carbonation. The aroma has caramel wheat and hints of banana and sweet roast. The flavor is very similar with sweet caramelized wheat malt, bread crust, and a hint of banana. It is kind of sweet like a brown ale. It has a medium-light body and subtle mouthfeel.

12 fl. oz. bottle (twist-off) from Jungle Jim’s International Market in Fairfield, Ohio. Rating #219 for this beer.

Overall Impression: This is probably the best thing I ever had from Shiner, a nice example of the dunkel style, with a light but highly drinkable flavor combination.

12oz bottle. Poured an amber color with a deep red hue. Has a tan head that thins. Nice amount of lacing.Has a sweet malt, and wheat with a hint of brown sugar aroma. The taste is pretty much the same along with a hint of caramel and raisins. Has a smooth and crisp finish. not much else to say.

Pours a very dark brown, with tan head. Smells of wheat. The taste is a little lackluster for a Dunkelweizen, pretty weak.

Not really a winter beer. Amber pour with a two finger head. No lacing on the side of the glass. Medium body and carbonation.
