Commercial Description:
Shiner Dunkelweizen is a crisp, hearty brew modeled after a Bavarian-style dunkelweizen, German for dark wheat. Shiner Dunkelweizen is fermented with an old-world technique called Kräusening, brewed to be smooth and rich without being heavy on the palate. Its subtle flavors come from the brew’s malted wheat and malted barley. This beer uses the old Czech mashing technique of taking small portions of the mash and boiling, then mixing it back in the main mash. This technique, called ‘decotion’, takes a great deal more time... but develops the rich dark color and creates the body which is enjoyed in the finished beer.

Fairly rich mahogany color with a short head and lacing. Mild aroma-dark malt, hint of spice. Light to medium bodied, creamy toasty caramel flavor w/ coffee note, bittersweet finish. Clean, quite drinkable but oh so tame.

Mahogony colored, small head. Cookie dough nose - but light. Oily texture - thick - actually in a very unpleasant way (makes me think of swalloing curdled milk - YUCK). Some malt and some yeast in the taste - all in all cardboardy.

12 oz bottle. Attractive clear reddish-brown hue with fluffy tan head. Aroma is spicy with a hint of cinnamon doughnuts. Roasty and tangy up front with a mellow caramel flavor that gives way to a nice grainy aftertaste.

Red/brown color with no head. Aroma is slightly smokey and wheaty. Flavor is initally roasty but with a mild wheaty character in the finish. Body is quite watery and lght.

Clearfiltered appearance with smallish head. I don’t detect th "weizen" in this. Sweet like their "bock" with fruitier taste. Sesion beer that misses the mark in the style, but pleasantly refreshing nevertheless.

Amber wih a thin tan head with zero lacing. Slight nutty aroma, with nothing off, but not much there. Flavor is subtle, pleasing but understated. Fresh, not bad with a burger.

The bottle poured a clear, dark reddish amber beverage with a small fizzy tan head that dissipated quickly and left almost no lacing on the glass. The aroma was sweet. It was reminiscent of cotton candy and cooked sugar with notes of caramel. It had a medium body with lively, sharp carbonation and a bit of a dry texture. The flavor starts off sweet and roasty and maintains that sweetness throughout the average length finish. Although the beer was pleasant to consume, it misses the style guidelines for a Dunkelweizen on almost every count. Most Dunkelweizen is cloudy, unfiltered. It should have a long-lasting white head. I should have been able to find banana and clove in the flavor and aroma. This is supposed to be spicy, fruity and malty ... It’s all missing!

Bottle: Translucent copper, large foamy off-white head, spotty lacing, light carbonation.   Sure looks filtered.   Fake fruity aroma, oddly enough its just like those plastic rubbery Fruit-Os candies.   There is also a burnt malt and charcoal tinge.   Flavor is malty, not very wheaty, with a charred cardboard aftertaste.   Somewhat muddled.   This does not seem at all like a Dunkelweizen.   Body and mouthfeel are average.   Fairly sweetened roasted malt finish.   Unfortunately for Spoetzl, this one does not even compare to most Dunkelweizens.
