Commercial Description:
Shiner Dunkelweizen is a crisp, hearty brew modeled after a Bavarian-style dunkelweizen, German for dark wheat. Shiner Dunkelweizen is fermented with an old-world technique called Kräusening, brewed to be smooth and rich without being heavy on the palate. Its subtle flavors come from the brew’s malted wheat and malted barley. This beer uses the old Czech mashing technique of taking small portions of the mash and boiling, then mixing it back in the main mash. This technique, called ‘decotion’, takes a great deal more time... but develops the rich dark color and creates the body which is enjoyed in the finished beer.

I remember growing up near shiner in the early 80’s...their highschool football team used to have a Shiner beer bottle on the helmet and Shiner would have a beer truck at some games giving the beer away. Of course that has changed now. Decent beer.

bottle. pours a reddishdark brown with a thin light tan head.caramel in the nose is the only thing that jumps out at me. spiced sweet flavor. there is nutmeg and cinnamon and a caramel flavor throughout. bitter in the finish that leaves a dry wheaty taste. might be the best shiner product i’ve had.

The aroma is raisin bread, bananas, and chocolate. The apperance is a reddish brown with a moderate head. The flavor is quite malty with a hint of wheat, chocolate, and berries? The aftertaste is fairly dry and a bit watery. A decent sipper and about as much that can be expected from Shiner.

Poured from the bottle at the Cedar Door in downtown Austin, Tx. Dark red to light copper appearance, quick, light off white head, no lacing. Aroma has some fresh lake water notes with faint whisp of wort, but not very strong. Flavor has some caramel notes, with a faint trace of cloves and bananas. Mouthfeel is thick enough. Decent companion to a shrimp Po Boy. Better than Shiner Bock.

Bottle. Flat head, there was some, but it left quickly. Brown color. This is not a hefe--maybe a poor attempt at dunkel as the description says. Maybe a brown? Flavor is crap. Flat, tasteless, like they put the regular shiner bock in a bottle with a different label. In the aftertaste I do taste some wheat with a sickeningly sweet taste. This beer sucks. Why, oh why did I buy a whole 6 pack?

Texas, unfortunately, is not a hotbed of microbreweries, at least none comparable to the better establishments of Colorado and the Pacific Northwest. Nonetheless, Shiner makes a respectable attempt at brewing, but this offering is nothing short of... mediocre. Slight metallic finish ruins any potential it has initially. Overpriced.

I haven’t had this beer in a few year but remeber it as being very wheaty and much better than the shiner summer brew. Had a very unique straw flavor. I have tried the summer stock again this year and find it much better than I had rembered. while many post I’ve read this year for the winter brew sound like they are talking about a completly differnet beer than I rember. I’m starting to wonder weather the shiner summer/winter recipies change from year to year a little. If so either of these could be a risky choice.

Pours clear brown with thin off white head. Nose is intriguing floral hops and wheat. Imagine my dismaywhen the beer tastes like old socks, drywall, and paste. Dreadful aftertaste. This is probably just a really bad bottle, but I don’t think I’ll have the courage to try this stuff again. Horrible.
