Commercial Description:
Effervescent, this summer brew is fashioned after the Kolsch biers that originated in Cologne, Germany, in the 1800s. Hallertau, Magnum, and Mount Hood hops combine for an especially clean, crisp finish.

Very golden, kind of thin. Dry taste with lots of carbonation. Strange burning after taste though. Other than that, not a lot of flavor. Left me kind of thirsty.

Golden color with a moderate head. Aromas of caramel and grass. Tastes of light malts and grain. Crisp and refreshing.

Honey and caramel on the nose. Deep gold color without much of a head. Has a sugary sweetness, some floral notes, and a bit of a "dusty" taste. Very fizzy, light body, and crisp. Not remarkable, but not terrible.

this beer holds the same tantalizing mysteries that many artifacts from ancient anasazi culture do: that is, we simply cannot discern what it is, or what it is for. "kolsch" domestically is too often just a synonym for a weenie beer that arrives at the doorstep of an american standard lager just by taking a different route. i bought this during some of the hotter days of late summer; days when, out working, i thought that even my internal organs would overcook like cafeteria corn-on-the-cob in the unrelenting scorch. yet, when i placed this beer against a thirst born of extended exertion, coupled with heat unrelieved with shade, still it brooded heavily upon my palate and could no more erase the pangs of thirst in a pleasing way than had i availed myself of a luke warm bird bath. i offered the beer up before a daring palate-- one admittedly not well accustomed to the world of fresh kolsch-- but enamored of the notion of a german ale, fruity and yet clean, and again this beer sat like a goldfish confronted with astrophysics, recognizing no kinship with my preconception. the beer is mild grain soup of wheat, grass and corn, a pottage that could perhaps nourish a field mouse, but by comparison leaves us higher vertebrates pining for more. deserving of high marks for appearance, the bright wash of yellow could have been lifted from a school bus, the foam borrowed from the lather of a waterfall. alas, the aroma was weak with sliced apple, frosted flakes and the woody note that attends the chewing of a pencil. "balanced" in it’s unchallenging mild body, it has a slight malt liquor like sweetness, dwarfish malts, and a modest lime peel bitterness. it taints rather than tantalizes the thirsty palette. like the smudged and cryptic runes on a pre-historic temple, this is a recipe that will forever baffle beer archeologists.

Clear pale yellow color with a thin head. Clean crisp taste but nothing great. Some balance with wheat, hops, and malt in the aroma. Needs more in the taste.

Once again, the nose-in-the-air masses undervalue a well made beer. Not everything Shiner does is extraordinary but they nail this lesser known regional german style very well. Like some exotic cheeses, a good Kolsch has a slightly funky aroma combined with a light but malty sweet finish. Very well made and very easy to drink
