Smell: Aroma of dark roasted malts with a heaping handful of licorice and just a hint of dark chocolate.
Taste: Dark, roasty malt character with a hint of sweetness. All the hints of licorice really start to give the impression of an imperial root beer. Finishes with a roasty bitterness and hints of flowers.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Somewhat spritzy carbonation that carries a sharp carbonic bite.
Drinkability: A very impressive root beer! TheBeerBaron (219), Florida, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Sep 22, 2007 Extreme dark brown color verging on black. Creamy high brown head, excellent lace action. Carbonation cannot be seen in such a dark brew. Aroma of coffee, toffee, and figs followed by a mild whiff of grassy hops. Heavy palate that’s a bit flat leading to a very thick feel. Initially has a burnt coffee taste thats powerful, then it shifts to a dry deep hop flavor. This is a mature man’s stout but lacks some of the exoticness and excitement of other well regarded stouts. mgumby10 (1858), Jupiter, Florida, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Sep 15, 2007 Black pour, with a creamy, light tan head. Mild aroma, the roast is the main character. maybe a hint of some dark chocolate too, but its faint. Medium-bodied, it has a very creamy texture. Overall quite bland in the flavor, there was a mild roastiness and some faint chocolate flavors but thats pretty much it. Super easy drinking. Nothing offensive about it at all, but certainly nothing exciting about it either. I’m not much on Shipyard, and this didnt change my mind, but it was at least drinkable. I guess I’m not huge on dry stouts either. redlight (1492), Winter Park, Florida, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 13, 2007 draft. Coffee and chocolate aromas on the nose, with a little vanilla. Pours black with a dense tan head. Good roasted flavors, hints of bitter chocolate, some coffee flavors, sweet with that hint of sourness from most irish stouts. Good solid stout, easy to drink. grandet (486), Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA

Heavy smell and taste of deep and darkly roasted malts, in fact a little smokey. A little thin for stouts. Touch of hoppy bitterness towards the end. good job on a good stout"

Bit of a head, very malty with focus on roasted flavor without much in the way of hops, somewhat dry finish. Nice. Certainly above average if you like malty. kp (8500), Woodstock, Georgia, USA
