good balance of malts and hops, aroma is predominately yeasty, great dark amber color, but for the beer tastes just a hair too much of alcohol for something that’s only 5.4% and this detracts somewhat, but for the most part very enjoyable

Dark but very smooth and slightly nutty. Was brewers choice 2005 and 2006 due to its high demand.

Pour is a very dark brown with a huge head. Aroma is bready and roasty. Flavor is roasted nuts with malts and a chocolate backbone. Goes down smooth with no bitterness or burn. Pretty good for a brown ale and just enough to put this one over the top.

’06 edition from 12 oz. bottle. Brown body with tan slowly disipating, somewhat thick head. Smells sweet, like many other brown ales, but not overly so. Tastes like a porter to me, strong coffee or chocolate flavor balanced with other malts. Definitely one of the best (if not THE best) Shipyard beer I’ve had, (other) winter seasonals included... Probably something I’d get again.

06 Brewer’s Choice Brown Special Ale-12 oz bottle-Best Enjoyed Before July 06-pours a creamy tan head with dark amber color. Aroma is nutty, malt. Taste is nutty, roasty, malt, maybe dark fruit. Good occasionally, OK carbonation.

Transluscent, majogony brown with a very thick collar of off-white head that darkens to tan at the edges. Diacetyl dominates the aroma but dry, baker’s chocolate and caramel show quite strongly. Flavor shows intensity. A little bit of everything that makes a good brown ale, a good brown ale. Unfortunately, the overriding buttery character, almost rancid butter, wrecks the finish. The beginning 90% of this beer is excellent, it is just the last 10% that is almost painful.

12oz bottle pours brown with a creamy tan head that stayed well and laced the glass. Aromas of caramel, nuts, and a touch of chocolate. Flavor is quite sweet, caramel, nuts, a touch of chocolate, and brown sugar. Palate is smooth and creamy and mouthcoating. A full bodied brown that I enjoyed.

The aroma is very sweet and coffee like. There is hops, malt, and some chocolate too. It is a lot like a porter. The appearance is a dark red brown with a small head. The flavor is acidic and bitter with malt, brown sugar, coffee, and chocolate. The palate is a little thin. Despite being well made I didn’t enjoy it all that much.
