Commercial Description:
Durban Pale Ale, was inspired by the original IPA’s produced in Britian and then shipped to India for consumption by the soldiers and bureaucrats. The IPA came via the Cape and records show that some of that beer made its way to the British serving in South Africa. With Durban then, as now, a major shipping port it is hard not to believe that barrels of IPA were happily consumed here on the East Coast, so we wanted to revive an old tradition. We only use the best malts for our Pale Ale, and in order to achieve our 5.7% ABV we need to pack the mash tun full of grains. The beer is also crammed full of hops to achieve the 40 units of bitterness that we want. We use Cascade hops since they don’t leave any lingering bitterness or harshness on the palate. The inclusion of Challenger hops provide the crisp, fruitiness characteristic of the beer, which is complimented by the special strain of English ale yeast that we use to ferment the beer. Our Durban Pale Ale is a strong beer and we have found that its character will change over time if cellared, producing an even more complex ale.

Bottle conditioned. Huge, white foamy head, but short duration. Hazy, orange body. Malt-fruity aroma with an acrid touch. Bitter dark fruits in flavour with malts behind. Soft, bitter endnotes. Medium bodied (Bottle bought at BSF, GBBF 07.08.2008).

Bottle. High creamy and long lasting white head. Hazy amber body. Herbal and spicy malt aroma. Cannot quite figure out the spices. They are quite dominating leaving out fruit and hops bittterness which I had expected. I guess it is nutmeg and coriander. Low carbonation, long aftertaste.

Bottle. Orange/gold with a large off-white foam. Aromas are oranges and pine with woody notes and spices. Spritzy and fresh. Flavours are yeast, citrus and spices with woody pine. Dry and bitter on the finish with some herbal notes. Good.

Botella. Clear golden. Big fairly well lasting off-white head. Hoppy fruity and toasty malty aroma. Good mouthfeel. The flavour has a nice soft sweetness with toasty malt and bitter hops.

Bottle. [thank you, faroeviking]
Pours clear golden with a big, creamy, white head. Nice lacing. Aroma is rather malty, bready, some caramel and sweet fruity hops. High carbonation, just a bit thin. Flavour is soft, a bit fruity and a very dry finish. Okay brew.
