The Drunken Toad was always beaten up by the average beer drinker at Shoreline. A light ale with a ton of hops, it was definitely a mouth-puckerer. It was mixed with the Singing Sands Oatmeal Stout and aged in a barrel, and turned into what I thought was a pretty great concoction. Lots of bourbon overtones, the hops are subdued. Fine dark beer with ruby tones, finishes with a nice alcohol warmness.

If you’ve had the Shoreline Singing Sands Oatmeal Stout, you know it’s great. The Drunken Toad has other opinions - only a Hophead could love it. I like about 4 swigs of the Drunken Toad, and then I’m ready for a Miller Lite. However, this mixture, with it also being aged for 6 months in a bourbon barrel (how does one exactly obtain a 12-year old bourbon barrel - forget it, I DON’T WANNA KNOW!!!!), mellows the Toad. You still get a bit of hoppy flavor, but the oatmeal stout mellows it, as does the overtones of bourbon (Is it Jim Beam? - Nah, don’t tell me!). Served at the pub in a 10.5 oz glass, because a 12 oz glass of this would kick your booty. You can’t taste the alcohol as you drink this, but you can feel it. Order a loaf of pretzel bread and the Buffalo Calamari with this and you’re straight!!!

dark brown pour with a tan head that disappears. the nose was nothing but air. i didn’t get a hint of the bourbon (commercial description says "elijah craig bourbon". never heard of it). the flavor also has no hint of bourbon which is the only reason i tried this brew. sorry. this one either missed the target, or neglected to tell me what the target was (and that’s too much like work to me).

Tap. Pours dark brown with some light penetrating, almost no head. Aroma is bourbon, roasted malts, floral hops. Flavor is bourbon, oak, chocolate malts, citrus, oatmeal. Palate is a little light for my liking, medium overall, lightly carbonated, finished bitter. Nothing to write home about, decent attempt.

Growler shared by murrayswine on 12/16/06: Pours a transparent dark mahogany with a thin ring of tan head. Aroma of dry, earthy oaky malty notes. Body starts with a lightly sweet caramel maltiness thinning some toward a drier, slightly earthy lingering finish with some mild warmth.

Thanks to Murrayswine. Growler- (First pint out of a snifter, tasted later chugging the rest of the growler) Pours a dark brown color, small white head. Aroma is chocolate covered oatmeal with some fruit tossed in there. Drinking this I’m not sure what to think. I really dont even know if i like it or not. Its different. Its an experiment, and I think they might be onto something.

Draft at the brew pub. Dark, dark brown color. Almost opaque with some orange around the edges. Aroma was not unlike several of the other beers I tried at the brew pub...subdued dried fruits. Tasted of light malty caramel and a touch of bourbon. Finish was somewhat bitter.

Thanks Chris! The beer pours to a deep ruby body with a thin watery head. The aroma is strange. I think Chuck’s right with the tobacco aromas. Other than that, I’m confused on it. The flavor is fairly light and a touch rawly bitter. Perhaps some tobacco and dry English hops. Meh. The palate is dry, sweet, confusing.

Dark nearly black pour w/ some red hints and a light tan head w/ some good lacing. Light aroma hints of oak and light tobacco w/ some good carmel malts a very dry roast and some light grass. Light pal. Flavor has tiny bits of smoke some light roast malts a tiny bit of light hopping.. very light.. just not much to this.. not that great.
