Commercial Description:
Monks brewed this beer for Lent, while fasting they were allotted a few liters of beer a day to sustain life. For forty days all they could consume was beer, so they made it strong, and hearty. Our dopplebock is both strong and hearty, while also being ultra smooth.

Draft at the brewery. Poured dark amber with an average frothy white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate balanced malty and sour citrus hop aroma. Medium body with a slick texture. Medium sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. This is the standout beer of the beers tasted.

Tap at the brewery. Medium sized ivory head with good lacing, transparent, no visible carbonation, and a golden, orange hue. Malty, caramel, sweet, some toffee, and hop nose. Flavor was sweet, somewhat bitter, some hops, and malty. Tingly mouthfeel. This is a beer style that I greatly enjoy; however, this one missed the mark for enjoyment. On the day of rating this, it didn’t hit the mark for a good dopplebock. It was just so-so.

On tap at the brewpub. The color threw me off a bit. Very light, pale even, in color. Super Miabock maybe? Spicey hop quality in the nose. Lots of alcohol. I didn’t really this as much as I’d hoped.

This beer is scary. The bartenders are nice enough to warn you about the alcohol content of this beer. The reason they do so is because if you have 4 or 5 of these beers (served in a glass that is smaller than a pint) you will find yourself on the floor. Great flavor. Very smooth for a doppel bock. Not hoppy at all. Finishes clean. Beware, though. This will knock you on your rear end.

Tap at brewery and served in a 10.5 ounce glass: Clean deep amber hue with a small lasting head but very good lace. The aroma has notes of apple, pear, caramel, toffee, grassy and aromatic hops, and an earthy yeast ester. The taste starts with a nice sweet malt base but not cloying, fruity with a hint of rose hips and clove as well. A finishing notes of German hops (Saaz perhaps?) which led to a lingering biscuity finish. The mouth feel is smooth and does not display any note of alcohol, very quaffable, almost too easy to drink! A nice classic dopple IMO, yummy! Very well done Sam.
